Rail Express --> Passenger services modernised on regional WA services

QuotePassenger services on Transwa regional trains in Western Australia will be upgraded, with the potential of a bring your own device service for entertainment and wi-fi connectivity.

WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said that ENGIE/Icomera will first look into installing the BYO device hardware on Transwa's bus fleet, with the plan to roll out the same feature to regional train services operated by Transwa.

"The McGowan Government is fully committed to getting the best possible outcomes for our regions, and that includes the amenity of the trains and road coaches available," said Saffioti.

"High-quality onboard entertainment is a big part of that, and I am pleased that we are able to capitalise on advances in modern technology to make further improvements in what is already an excellent service."

The Prospector service between Kalgoorlie and Perth already has personalised on demand entertainment services and has recently been upgraded with a new content provider to give passengers a greater selection of movies.

ENGIE/Icomera has also been tasked to look into the feasibility of introducing wi-fi on the Prospector and AvonLink, MerredinLink, and Australind train services.

Other passenger services improvements include a real-time arrival and departure information screen at Kalgoorlie Station, which will overcome limited connectivity along the line, said Mining and Pastoral MLC Kyle McGinn.

"The on-time screens at Kalgoorlie Station will be of huge benefit to those picking up someone at the station, to ensure less time wasted waiting for a text message through some dodgy reception patches."

When making the announcement on June 19, Saffioti also highlighted that on-train passenger assistants will be brought back in-house and will be employed directly by Transwa instead of through a subcontracted service provider, Delron.

The Rail, Tram, and Bus Union welcomed this decision.

"The WA Government's acknowledgement of the superiority of public sector employment should not end here – we now need to build momentum to see more jobs brought back into the public system," said WA PTA Branch Secretary Josh Dekuyer.

Perth already does a pretty good job of this. The Mandurah line is a great example, and the planned extension to Yanchep and the plans to develop Yanchep as a commerical hub to suit are all good initiatives.

Rail Express --> Wi-Fi, station upgrades for Prospector service coming in 2021

QuotePassengers on the Prospector service between Perth and Kalgoorlie will soon have access to Wi-Fi, in a 12 month trial.

Following a feasibility study, Prospector trains will be fitted out with the technology to allow passengers to stay connected in remote areas.

"We have committed to a 12-month trial of Wi-Fi on the Prospector, to make journeys between Perth and Kalgoorlie more enjoyable for passengers," said Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan.

WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said that the improved connectivity would improve the passenger experience. ...

Last updated Monday 28 June

From 12.01am Tuesday 29 June for a minimum four days the Perth and Peel region will enter into a lockdown. For more information, visit 4-day lockdown introduced for Perth and Peel.

Wearing a mask is mandatory on all Transperth services, unless you have an exemption. If you refuse to wear a mask that you have or when you are given one, you may be denied travel. If you are exempt from wearing a mask you will need to provide supporting evidence. Primary school students (or younger) are exempt from mandatory mask wearing rules, however they can choose to wear a mask if they wish to.

When travelling, please be mindful that some passengers are lawfully exempt from wearing masks, including some people with a disability. Many people rely on public transport to get around and simply do not have the option of choosing another mode of transport to travel if they are unable to wear a mask. We ask all passengers for their understanding if they see someone travelling without a mask. We encourage physical distancing on all modes of public transport where possible.

When travelling with us there are a few things that we ask you do:

Wear a mask onboard all services, at bus stops, the ferry jetties and at stations, unless you have an exemption

Physically distance, where possible

Use a SmartRider when you are travelling. Please make sure it is registered and keep your registration up to date. You can do this here: Registering your SmartRider card (transperth.wa.gov.au)

When using the Free Transit Zone (FTZ) please use a SmartRider and tag on and off each service. You will not be charged a fare if your journey starts and finishes within the FTZ

When travelling on CAT buses, please use the SafeWA app and scan the QR code on board each bus. As the code is unique to each CAT bus, you will need to do this on every CAT service you travel on.

Details on the SafeWA app can be found here: COVID-19 coronavirus: SafeWA (www.wa.gov.au)

I understand there is a lot of overlap with some residual paid services on the route - a bit like the Cityhopper except most of the services at those stops will now be free.

That's now 5 in the CBD (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green and Purple, plus every paid Transperth service within the free transit zone in the CBD), 1 at Fremantle (Blue), and 2 at Joondalup (Blue/Red are clockwise and anti-clockwise on the same route, and Yellow).  Astonishing to think there is an entire depot at Claisebrook basically dedicated to providing only free buses.

Why Fast Trains Work: An Assessment of a Fast Regional Rail System in Perth, Australia

https://espace.curtin.edu.au/bitstream/handle/20.500.11937/12538/196831_94795_JTTs_2013052415363249.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y

Quote7. Lessons of Fast Rail for Low Density Cities One of the most contentious debates in public transport planning is the role of transfer costs in deterring patron- age due to time losses. This has been used to stop many rail projects [18,19]. The Southern Rail was designed to minimize transfer penalties by well-integrated bus inter- changes and bus services. As a result these are responsible for 85% of the patronage, a figure much higher than for most rail systems.

Quote... Premier Mark McGowan and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti told press on Sunday that free all-day travel on the first Sunday of each month was part of a plan to attract more people to public transport and help ease cost of living pressures.

Funded through the 2023-24 state budget, the new initiative will apply to people using SmartRider cards, so the number of rides can be tracked and the two-year policy assessed.

It can also be accessed by passengers in Bunbury and Karratha where TransRegional Sunday bus services operate.

"The free offer will allow more families to experience more parts of Perth, without the hassle or costs of parking," McGowan said. ...

^ interesting move.

The tone deaf Palaszczuk Government turned up their noses for some free travel prior to Christmas 2022 in acknowledgement of the significant bus disruptions (which is ongoing).

It is no surprise that the polls for Premier Palaszczuk are turning.

They are:

Alstom Transport Australia and Downer EDI Works
Siemens Mobility, Siemens Mobility GmbH and Wabtec Control Systems (SafePerth)
The companies were shortlisted after submitting EOI applications in September last year. They will now progress to the second stage of a Competitive Early Contractor Involvement process, where they will prepare more detailed submissions.

Funded by the State and Commonwealth governments, the HCS project will replace Perth's ageing urban rail network control systems with a more modern, integrated, communications-based train control system, allowing more trains to run more often. ...
