Long serving bus driver killed in head-on crash

QuoteLong serving bus driver killed in head-on crash

A bus driver described as "everyone's mate" died and 14 passengers were injured in a head-on collision between a four-wheel drive and a bus on the Sunshine Coast.

Local Sunbus driver Bruce Kent, 50, died at the scene and eight passengers were hospitalised after the crash, which occurred about 11am today at the intersection of Nambour Connection Road and Ayshire Road, Yandina.

A member of the Transport Workers' Union for 22 years, Mr Kent was described as one of Queensland's most dedicated drivers.

Megan Harkin, the general manager of Transit Australia Group, the parent company of Sunbus, said Mr Kent was a man who always had a smile on his face.

"He had a wonderful nature and truly was everyone's mate," Ms Harkin said.

"He was a very very popular man and had been driving on the Sunshine Coast for almost 20 years.

"Our priority now is to ensure we support the driver's family and the extended Sunbus family, who are saddened and shocked by this tragic accident."

Ms Harkin said Sunbus would be organising counselling for all drivers affected by their colleague's death.

Transport Workers' Union branch secretary Hughie Williams said Mr Kent was one of the best drivers in Queensland.

While it is believed Mr Kent was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, Mr Williams renewed his call for seatbelts in every Queensland bus.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officers used hydraulic cutting equipment to free three people from the wreckage, including the driver of the four-wheel drive and one bus passenger who was trapped.

Others injured in the accident include a 26-year-old man, who is in a serious but stable condition and underwent surgery just after 1.30pm, a Nambour Hospital spokesman said.

A 56-year-old woman with multiple injuries is still being treated at the hospital, while six others suffering from head, chest, leg and arm injuries have been discharged.

Six other people were also injured in the crash but were not taken to hospital.

Police are investigating the accident.
