Standing here on platform 5 at central waiting for 2.52 redbank service. Tilt train just ran through on platform 5 track at around 40-50kph with a few hundred commuters on the platform and no warning. Announcement made on speakers as the tilt train was roaring through and thus was ineffective. Then again the stupid older woman who decided to get to the far end of the platform by walking on the yellow marked pavers while the tilt train passed almost won herself a darwin award. Not a very safe thing to occur at all really.

There is a fair bit of through running at Central.  I have regularly observed people walking along the edges, particularly at peaks.

Even the suburbans can cause grief as they arrive if the punters fall into them.  I suppose there is a limit with what you can do.  Same problem with roads.  People regularly walk into traffic!

I personally don't like the yellow tiles.  You might as well paint them grey as they are really a grey area.  You're supposed to stay behind them - but some people seem to think that they just can't go beyond them - so happily walk along the tiles.

Go back to a single yellow line that makes it clear!

Did the Tilt Train blow it's horn on approach to the platform?

Ever been on the New York Subway system??
Express and all stoppers literally roar through or into the stations which at all hours of the day are more congested than Central at 1700hrs.
And there are NO ear splitting horns allowed.
Standing clear of the platform edge is a culture instilled in the seasoned subway traveller.
Safety starts and finishes with the individual.

Hmmm . . . since Queensland has, by far, the highest per capita population in regional centres (in any state). I wonder how many of them take train travel in BNE. Could it be those along with the infrequent traveller, oblivious to the extreme danger posed by their behaviour. This simple error of judgement directly affects loyal and committed rail workers, family & emergency workers etc.

In an environment whereby station masters & staff can be responsible for up to 1000+ people and their transport needs I believe they need to be alert to current happenings. After all staff, thats twice as many as a plane !
An educational program - via walking station staff along the platform along with messages via PA system wouldn't go astray.

If any of you want to see how crazy the situation can get, observe what they now have to contend with at Sydneys Town Hall. It takes 3, yes 3 staff, along the platform to supervise travellers as trains approach and leave platforms. Many new transport systems resort to having gates or doors on the platform. Huge expense that could be used elsewhere. QR, lets postpone these ridiculous scenarios for as long as possible.
In the end we are all responsible for ourselves, however, with such ignorant or inconsiderant people it affects the train systems efficiency, hence peoples' willingness to rely on it and choose to use it.

all city stations should have gates installed like hong kong or the Olympic station is Sydney.
"Where else but Queensland?"

There must be a declining level of inteligence and sense of personal responsibility that it becomes necessicary to corral commuters like cattle.

Markus

I agree mufreight, coralling is expensive and does not encourage ppl to use the intelligence they were born with.
Selfishly I have to admit IF it becomes necessary in yrs to come to corral the foolhardy, Im for it, just to ensure the SEQ system stays as efficient as possible.

Call me Mussolini for awhile if you wish.  I can handle it.   lol    ;)

That would be very expensive, with little benefit. Limited public transport infrastructure funds would be better spent on other things.

In many countries H&S rules only allow platform edge gates to be used in conjunction with automatic train operation (ATO), as station stops have to be very accurate (+/- 30cm). I can't see ATO being introduced on the CityTrain network in the near future.

Hello,

If QR were really serious about "zero harm" or whatever the policy name is as it applies to passengers,
we would all have seat belts on trains - just look at how many were injured on the tilt-train accidents.
It really is a bureaucratic joke !  Wow!

( I have been told that "zero harm" is an internal initiative for QR employees, and e.g. they are instantly dismissed if they cross the rail tracks - yet the public and passengers can legally cross the tracks at Palmwoods and Woombye stations at dedicated mini-crossovers, complete with concrete paths right up to the tracks).

I have again asked for the reasons behind this policy and have been met with a wall of silence.
I raised it in our CRG meeting and was told that they would pursue it for me.
Sent them copies of my emails and have heard nothing since.
I'm looking forward to the next meeting ... where I'll ask why.  protest

There is more to this policy than meets the eye.

The pedestrian crossing just south of Woombye railway station has been there for many many years and generally gets used by the local residents. "Zero harm" hey, what ever happened to individuals using the thing between their ears (the brain) and good old fashion common sense when crossing railway tracks. Duh....I'm about to use a pedestrian style railway crossing....think first....concentrate....possible danger alert is in high mode....check thoroughly for possible trains approaching through using our ears for sound and eyes for looking and then if safe enough and clear proceed to cross the tracks with caution.
