From the 8th of December 2008, Airtrain is kicking off a 6 month promotion for kids aged (5-14) to travel free between the Airport and City stations when accompanied by a paying adult, subsequent to the following terms.
Kids Travel Free on Airtrain

Details of the Promotion

There is no limit to the number of children that can travel free with a paying adult. You can even take an entire school group to or from the airport accompanied by a single adult.

The offer is only available between the Domestic and International Airport stations and City Stations. The list of city stations is Central Station, Roma Street, Fortitude Valley, South Brisbane, Bowen Hills, Albion, Wooloowin and Eagle Junction.

You can still purchase child tickets at all other QR suburban stations and only need to pay the cost of travel to the city, not all the way to the airport. More --> here!

This is an innovative promotion.

My understanding, in summary:

If accompanied by a paying adult, you can obtain free child tickets (paper tickets) between the airport and city stations from an attended station.

If not accompanied by a paying adult, (or if using the GO Card, or purchasing a ticket from a ticket vending machine) only the section from Eagle Junction to the airport is free.  The fare beyond Eagle Junction is standard TransLink child/concession fare (no GO Card discount).

It is interesting that Airtrain are using the exact Translink fares for the "non-Airtrain portion" in this case, and not an inflated (higher than Translink) fare, which currently applies for adult tickets, as explained here:

Consistent with the current arrangements for adult tickets, a 10% online discount is available, but the GO Card users miss out on the 20% - 35% discount and transfer capabilities.  Which means that, as with the adult fares, breaking your journey at CBD / Eagle Junction, etc, may be necessary for best value using the GO Card.

So the most economical and straightforward way would be to travel to a CBD station (or Eagle Junction) by whatever the most economical method is (eg: GO Card on train and/or bus), and then purchase the Airtrain tickets (and free children's tickets) from the (attended) CBD station.

On that note,

Is it possible to buy city->Airport tickets from an attended non-CBD station?
(eg, at Robina station, can I purchase a South Brisbane->Domestic Airport ticket?)

Is it possible to buy Eagle Junction->Airport tickets from a ticket vending machine at another station?
