The Inner-Northern Busway was closed and a busy CBD shopping centre evacuated this morning after a fire alarm was activated.

About 6.40am, safety fans and smoke alarms were activated in the King George Square tunnel, which links the Queen Street and King George Square bus stations.

Emergency crews were on the scene within minutes, a Translink spokeswoman said.

The lower floor of the Myer Centre was evacuated and commuters faced short delays.

It was later found to be a false alarm.

The spokeswoman said said buses were diverted after the alarm was triggered, and some delays were experienced at the King George Square, Roma Street and Queen Street stations.

It was the first time the automated alarm system had gone off since the busway opened in May.

The King George Square Busway reopened at 8.35am. Technicians are still investigating the source of the fault.
