Fix Up Brisbane City Council and Moreton Bay Regional Council Bus Networks to Alleviate Northwest Congestion

11th March 2023

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based advocate for public transport passengers again calls on Brisbane City Council's (BCC) and TransLink to expand Brisbane Metro BRT bus services and high-frequency BUZ bus services into Northwest Brisbane.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is right - people want solutions.

Extending high-frequency bus services such as the 'Brisbane Metro' Bus Rapid Transit buses, CityGliders, and BUZ high-frequency buses are the fastest and cheapest way to relieve Brisbane Northside congestion issues.

Lack of quality bus service in Warner, Albany Creek and the Hills District pushes those areas towards driving, congesting roads on both sides of the Council border. A lot of traffic is from MBRC (Moreton Bay Regional Council).

Examples of solutions:

- Upgrade Route 359 serving Eatons Hill and Albany Creek along Old Northern and South Pine Roads to a BUZ service. Unbelievably, this bus service operates only hourly during weekdays.

- Upgrade Route 350 serving Beckett Rd and South Pine Rd parallel to the North West Transport Corridor.

- Extend Brisbane Metro BRT along Gympie Road. BCC's claim that without a North West Motorway " a BRT in the form proposed is not feasible due to its impact on road capacity ..." in our opinion is a falsehood.

We invite BCC to present evidence to substantiate their claim that the Gympie Road corridor would suffer a reduced overall capacity once Brisbane Metro BRT is added to it. Our estimates show that a BRT service would absorb all displaced road users, negating the need for a Northwest Motorway. See https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15079.0

- We have also called for a bus service to UQ Chancellors Place via Ashgrove and Enoggera, and reform of the Great Circle bus line. We have been advocating for this for the last 10 years.

We anticipate that BCC will claim that Translink funding isn't forthcoming for additional bus service. However, we also think that if BCC gives specific undertakings to simplify its bus network then we think Translink will be more inclined to provide additional funding.
