What is being done to address bus driver shortages?

15th October 2024

Greetings,

We have become increasingly concerned with the number of bus service disruptions, mainly service cancellations, being reported every day for the Translink bus networks.

At RAIL Back On Track we monitor the number of bus service disruptions reported daily by Translink on X.  There has not been any improvement, and in fact is getting worse.

Full details are available at on our Forum at https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?board=112.0

Note well that during the recent school holidays service delivery improved.  This is to be expected as the bus operators don't have to deliver the school bus routes, hence more drivers available and they are better placed to deliver the normal route services.  Still poor delivery though.

As we head to towards the Queensland State Election on the 26th October, an alert media could perhaps ask the Government and the Opposition what they plan to do to help our bus operators get enough bus drivers to deliver the services?  It is somewhat farcical for both the ALP and LNP to state that the 50 cent fares will be made permanent, but what is the point if there is no bus to catch?

Where are the policies to address the bus driver shortages?  We suggest that Government needs to consider supporting individuals to obtain bus licences. This could increase the pool of bus drivers and help shift the mean age of bus drivers down. Many operators are getting somewhat desperate.

Not very satisfactory is it?

Re: What is being done to address bus driver shortages?

Greetings,

The situation on the buses is serious.   Here is an update for this week.
Shambles is probably too polite a description.

We blunder on with the bus driver shortages, constant bridge strikes, and all we hear about is how wonderful the 50 cent fares are!
Again if there is no bus or train to catch the 50 cent fares are meaningless.  Most of the bus network is low frequency, when a service is cancelled it has significant impacts on passengers.

The fact that the public transport network is in serious trouble is ignored.  The state election offers little hope that this will be turned around. It will probably get even more diabolical.

Vote early but don't vote often!

Something that has been established with Translink X reporting of bus service disruptions is the now routine practise of reporting multiple bus service disruptions with the one X ('tweet').  This is a sign on the increased reporting load, this was never really done until recently.

This is an ongoing mess.  https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15659.0

Seems Government, Translink are not interested in doing anything.

Not much point in 50 cent fares when your bus doesn't show up hey ...
