I have received a suggestion for improving Gympie bus services.

Just for your information.  The suggestions have been forwarded to the appropriate authorities.

=====

29th August 2020

Attached is an idea for upgrading local bus services around Gympie we have used the existing 2 low floor bus fleet (Polleys Coaches) to operate this new service. This also means that these Low floor buses will not be able to carry out school routes as they currently do. Therefore we propose that 2 (possibly second hand) school bus vehicles be purchased to relieve the Low floors from the school route duties.

Attached files include; driver rosters, timetables and route maps.

New services now operate every 2 hours over 5 local routes and cover mostly the same area with some extensions. Route operating hours are designed to operate before and after normal office ours of 8am to 5pm. This will give more people an opportunity to catch the bus to work.

The new network will be focused around Gympie Central and with that, there is a need to have at least a toilet facility at Perseverance St with a dedicated bus layover from the pedestrian crossing to Excelsior Rd.

Care has been given to make sure new routes make the most effective use of existing bus stops to prevent council infrastructure waste.

James

Too many loops for my liking in this proposal, but it's a good starting point.

I didn't realise how bad the bus services were in Gympie. 3x services a day, every 90 minutes at best, almost no services after 3pm (except Route 50), you almost wonder why you'd bother. Can't be getting much patronage on those services. Really an extra school bus or two wouldn't go astray in exchange for being able to provide something like a half-reasonable coverage service.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Question on Notice
No. 1126

Asked on 16 September 2021

MR A PERRETT ASKED MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND MAIN ROADS (HON M BAILEY)

QUESTION:

With reference to the public transport system in Gympie last reviewed in 1987—
Will the Minister advise when a network review will be undertaken to update the current bus
system?

ANSWER:

I thank the Member for Gympie for the question.
Gympie's public transport network has been reviewed several times by the Department of
Transport and Main Roads (TMR) since 1987. The latest review was undertaken in 2019. These
reviews consider changes to transport infrastructure, land use, demographics and other emerging
priorities.

TMR will continue to monitor demand for services and identify opportunities for service increases
in future reviews of Gympie's public transport network. The next review is planned for the
2022–23 financial year

Question on Notice
No. 1187
Asked on 27 October 2022

MR A PERRETT ASKED MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND MAIN ROADS (HON M BAILEY)

QUESTION:

With reference to Question on Notice No. 1126 in 2021 and advice that a review of the Gympie
bus system will be undertaken in the 2022–23 financial year and given that several reviews from
1987 to 2019 have resulted in no actual change—
Will the Minister advise (a) whether the proposed review for 2022–23 FY has commenced,
(b) who is conducting the review, (c) who will be consulted and (d) when will the public be
consulted on the review?

ANSWER:

I thank the Member for Gympie for the question.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads' (TMR) vision and purpose is creating a single
integrated transport network accessible to everyone.

Reviews of local public transport networks are undertaken to consider factors such as changes
in population and demographics, changes in travel behaviour, and the expansion of new
residential estates. These reviews do not guarantee any new funding or change in services.

a) The review of Gympie's public transport network previously highlighted for 2022–23 is
planned to be undertaken in the first half of next year.

b) These reviews are part of TMR's internal planning processes and, as such, are carried out
by departmental officers.

c) In conducting these reviews, TMR engages with local government, its local delivery partner
and other State agencies.

d) Should the review recommend changes to services in the Gympie region, public
consultation and implementation would be subject to both the scope of the proposed
change, and competing statewide priorities for funding.
