Heavy rail extensions in SEQ, where are they?

29th March 2023

There's been a lot of talk in the press about the delays in building rail to Maroochydore, the first stage of which was supposed to be running by 2015.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey MP defended this, saying that it received $6m for planning.

The issue is however, it's not the only line stuck in planning. By 2031, SEQ was supposed to have 8 new heavy rail lines.

Only 2 out of the 8 ever got past the planning stage (Cross River Rail and the Redcliffe Peninsula line)

Along with the Sunshine Coast, places like Flagstone, Ripley and Coolangatta have been left on the backburner.

Why should these areas continue to be fobbed off?

Crikey, what a sad indictment on successive Queensland Governments.

So we have SEQ Rail Connect now, what's the chances of this being followed through with troops?

^ Ten points if you can guess who's going to be blocked next from the minister's Twitter account. :-c

And the honourable minister has said some pretty stiff things in the past. I think this govt really showing signs of expiry!!

It's showing signs of expiry, but the other mob isn't going to be any better unfortunately. Two peas from either end of the same pod.

There's basically no chance of this ever gaining traction, but I'd love to see some sort of 'urbanist party' or similar running for local and state elections. Realistically that's something that's very much in scope for local/state gov, and it'd be nice to see members of those levels of government actually focus on things their size, rather than just mirroring national politics on a smaller (& often more petty) scale
The best time to break car dependence was 30 years ago. The second best time is now.

I would honestly love to see a party like that. Unfortunately, with the mostly bi-partisan nature of Australian politics it seems unlikely. The closest we have is the Greens, but it's unlikely for them to gain widespread traction any time soon since they are also campaigning for a lot of fringe issues (which many voters may seem as extreme) too.

It's interesting since, at least from my understanding of our political history, there have been times where there's been 3 parties in the running. Perhaps someday the stars will align, and we'll have a more diverse political landscape once again.

I think Queensland getting rid of the senate was an awful idea long term since it removes any sort of diversity in politics. The senate is where most of the fringe parties can gain a seat or two, and the lack of one in Queensland has simply led to the 2-party system, with half a dozen crossbenchers if we're lucky, that we currently have.

The best bet is us (RBOT) running a campaign for public transport. A website, flyers, and a simple focus on 3 or 4 main concepts that ordinary people can understand.

I was thinking a tagline like this.

Looks great! This is the kind of simple-to-understand campaigns we should be putting out

Hopefully, TMR will also start extending the line from Varsity Lakes to OOL as well. It would be good to have this completed by the games as well.
