Stage 6

We have now completed the final planning layout for Stage 6. Feedback received during community consultation was evaluated to understand the communities preferences. This information has informed the options that will be progressed to the detailed design phase for the Stage 6 cycleway.

Construction of Stage 6 is subject to funding availability.

Design

Stage 6 of the cycleway is to be a 5m wide, off-road shared path that generally follows the existing coastal path. There will be separate spaces for pedestrians, and people on bikes, scooters, and other mobility devices.

Consultation confirmed that car parking is important to the community and the design being progressed results in no loss to the overall number of beachside car parking spaces.

The design ensures no impacts to the dunes and no median fencing on Alexandra Parade. In most locations along the path there is at least 2m of grassed separation between on-street car parking spaces and the shared path to allow safe unloading of vehicles.

A reduced speed limit from 60km/h to 50km/h will be applied to Alexandra Parade.

If its 5m isnt that like the Bicentennial Bikeway, with one side painted green?

Cazza

Yeah I was thinking that. Most cycleways are designed to be 3m bike lanes, 2m pedestrians. But I guess with the very high pedestrian traffic along the beachfront there, having 2m just for peds probably isn't sufficient (hence the need to remove parking to widen the path). But hey, removing parking to cater for/encourage the use of a more efficient and sustainable mode of transport... How would anyone be so despicable to suggest such a thing!

Just remember the village like atmosphere these communities have, especially on weekends and holidays ::)

Sunshine Coast Daily --> Sunshine Coast politician claims funding gone from M2M cycleway project $

QuoteA community group that helped redesign a controversial Sunshine Coast cycleway is confident construction of the polarising sixth stage of the project will go ahead.

The Mooloolaba to Maroochydore cycleway is being delivered by the Sunshine Coast Council and the state government.

Plans for stage six of the project, a 1.2km section from Mary St in Alexandra Headland to Sixth Ave in Maroochydore, faced community backlash in 2020 which forced Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey to scrap the initial design.

Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson on September 7, 2022, claimed that more than $5m in funding for the construction of the revised stage six had disappeared from the Queensland Transport and Investment and Roads Program. ...
