The existing golf course space is proposed to transition into a parkland that everyone can enjoy, while keeping the popular putt putt course, driving range and functions centre.

During 2019-20, community consultation will occur to create a Vision for Victoria Park that will protect green space for future generations and guide future enhancements.

From 2021, works are expected to start to transform the golf course into public parkland.

SOME of the city's leading architects and designers have revealed their vision for Brisbane's new mega-park that is set to rival some of the world's best.

It comes as more than 1000 Brisbane residents have shared their ideas for the park which has been touted as the river city's answer to London's Hyde Park and New York's Central Park.

Leading Brisbane designers including Place Design Group, Lat27, Conrad Gargett, Tract and Urbis have created their vision for the park which includes ideas from reforesting the park to creating water features and rock pools.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said design experts had developed the five concepts to inspire more ideas from residents for Brisbane's biggest new park in 50 years.

The consultation process is set to close in September and works to begin in 2021

"Some of the suggestions include reforesting the park, designing a space that allows us to appreciate our wildlife and rich cultural heritage, creating beautiful water play elements including rock pools," he said.

The designs also envision an accessible and active pedestrian-focused place that brings people together.

The Lord Mayor said that the conceptual vision designed by some of Brisbane's leading designers would help residents think out of the box before consultation on the inner-city greenscape closes in a month.

The new park, dubbed the Victoria Park Vision, will be the second largest in Brisbane at 45ha, behind the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens 52ha, and more than double the size of the City Botanic Gardens.

The current Victoria Park function centre and venue, putt putt course and driving range will remain at the tourist attraction, with works expected to comments in 2021.

The Sunday Mail can reveal the city's residents will be given a rare opportunity to explore the entire site, voice their ideas with the project team at the Council's 'Victoria Park Party' on September 22.

"There is a huge amount of greenspace at Victoria Park, it's as big as about 45 football fields, and this offers endless opportunities to transform this land into a public parkland that is uniquely Brisbane," Cr Schrinner said.

"We hope these ideas will capture the imagination of residents and inspire more of them to submit their vision for Victoria Park."

Environment, Parks and Sustainability Chair Fiona Hammond said it was "amazing" that residents from across Brisbane had contributed their thoughts on the mega-park.

"This is a park for all of Brisbane, including all our wonderful visitors," Cr Hammond said.

"This vision will double the size of the existing park and transform it into an amazing public greenspace that will help make Brisbane an even better place to live, work and relax."

^^Just Wow! I completed the survey and idea thread a couple.weeks ago. Definitely support a new direct cycle connection from the ICB overpass to QUT Kelvin Grove, The Rock Pools and simulated Forest Environment with koalas and butterflies. Plus a draw card art piece.

WATERSLIDES, interactive fountains, a city farm and even a swimming pond for dogs could be rolled out in Brisbane's biggest new park in almost half a century.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner will today announce a raft of ideas being considered by the council as they push ahead with plans to redevelop the underused Victoria Park golf course into a 45 hectare recreational park.

The ideas, which have been put forward by residents, also include night markets, running tracks and butterfly houses.

"The response from people so far on the vision to transform this land into public parkland for everyone to enjoy has been eye-opening and exciting," Cr Schrinner said.

"Just last month I handed the blank canvas of a 45-hectare park over to the community to plan, and they have not let me down.

"Almost 12,400 people have visited the Victoria Park Vision website, more than 1300 completed the online survey and more than 400 individual ideas have been submitted."

The announcement comes ahead of the "Victoria Park Party" being held by the council this Sunday, where residents will be given the opportunity to explore the site and put forward more ideas while the golf course is shut down for the day.

The council made the decision to permanently close down the Victoria Park golf course in the wake of dwindling patronage figures, with a 16 per cent reduction in visitors in the past eight years.

The driving range, putt-putt course, wedding venue and function centre are all expected to remain open.

When finished, the park will be the second-biggest in Brisbane, behind the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, but will be more than double the size of the City Botanic Gardens.

Cr Schrinner said this weekend's event would feature live music, kids' entertainment, market stalls, food trucks and workshops.

"As part of the event, we will be giving out event passports that will be stamped as you visit each activity station around the park, with residents who collect all the stamps going into the draw to win a prize," he said.

Consultation will close on Sunday, September 29.

A MASSIVE lake, mountain bike trails and even a high ropes course are all set to feature in Brisbane's biggest new park in half a century.

Brisbane residents will today be given their first glimpse of likely designs for the Victoria Park Vision as the council releases its draft master plan for the 45ha inner-city green sanctuary.

Among the headline features of the plan is a 1.4ha activity lake where keen kayakers will be able to hit the water.

A series of waterholes are also expected to be rolled out in the park as well as an "Adventure Valley" that will include an all-abilities high ropes course and a rainforest trail for mountain bikers.

A slope on the southern side of the park could be home to community gardens or potentially a small urban farm, beekeeping and composting facility.

Tree canopy cover over the park will be boosted from 10 per cent to 55 per cent, offering plenty of extra shade – particularly in a planned "urban forest".

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner predicted the vision would one day become one of Australia's most iconic parks.

"This is going to be a sanctuary in the city for residents and visitors," he said.

"It will be a place to relax and enjoy an eclectic range of attractions.

"This iconic park will also drive tourism by attracting national and international visitors, given its proximity to the city and public transport links, including the Brisbane Metro."

The park will be on the site of the existing Victoria Park Golf Course, which will be permanently closed down in 2021.

The draft master plan – which was created off the back of 5400 ideas from residents and the advice of design experts – will go out to community consultation until April 28.

The Rock Pools have been watered down a bit from the original artist's impressions.

I do like the overall iniative though. It will be a huge improvement. Just hope newly created lakes don't become a haven for mosquitos They need to ensure the lakes have ample water movement and circulation. The water from the rock pools need to be drained into storage tanks overnight like what happens at Broadwater Parklands.

The newly created active transport and pedestrian links to Kelvin Grove QUT from Gregory Tce will be a huge improvement.

They have also catered for the indigenous aspects as well, re Dreamtime story telling in reference to the local past of the overall area.

Too much space is dedicated to car parking at Brisbane's new super park proposed for a reshaped Victoria Park, Greens councillor Jonathan Sri says.

He questioned why the master plan called for an increase in car parking spaces by up to 30 per cent, when the park was so close to buses, trains and planned new cycleways.

Not many parks would have such frequent public transport between both ends for internal circulation and access to and from.  You definitely don't have 2 busway stations in Kings Park over in Perth, the Melbourne Botanic Gardens, all the parks around the Adelaide CBD etc.

Jono's become much more sensible as time goes on.  Next election cycle if the 2020 trend keeps up hopefully a few more non-LNP councillors get elected and become the nucleus of a more sensible opposition group (or hold the balance of power).

They should limit the amount of parking. But then people will just park on the surrounding streets instead? There is only 20% Public Transport use at best except for sporting and concert events which is slightly higher.

Next election cycle if the 2020 trend keeps up hopefully a few more non-LNP councillors get elected and become the nucleus of a more sensible opposition group (or hold the balance of power).

The appetite for a non-LNP option is definitely there. If this election had been compulsory preferential, I estimate the LNP would have at least 2 fewer seats and another 3 would've been retained by only a couple of hundred votes.

For the Kayak lake, though stupidly the car park is located well away from the lake. There are plenty of other locations around Brisbane more suitable for Kayaking but lacking in slipways, including Breakfast Creek.

If they want to retain the parking area where it is? It would make sense to allow for some kind of laneway access to drive down to launch your vessel, then drive back up the  laneway to the dedicated parking area.

A few carparks could be created on the water's edge for waiting and launching purposes only

My only real input, would be these things nowadays seem to have become a weird combo of jack-of-all-master-of-none experiences. A cross between Disneyland and a dozen other ''feel good'' things. It looks like they have done away with the rock pools? They were are good idea. Flowing water is better than stagnant water because of the mozzies. They have replaced it with a water play area with spout fountains and some running water from higher elevations.

Pedestrian and cycling access has improved dramatically and it looks like they will focus on the Metro at Herston Station and Kelvin Grove QUT station for Public Transport access. There is mention of access from the new Exhibition station but that is on the Park's far edge which is at least 5-10 mins away walking distance.
