MP calls for ferry alternative

QuoteMP calls for ferry alternative

IT'S high time to scrap the Moggill Ferry and replace it with a bridge, Member for Ipswich West Wayne Wendt says.

The issue ebbs and flows but came to the fore during the floods in January when Colleges Crossing was put out of action.

"At the time the option was to increase the height of Colleges Crossing to where it is 400 to 500m wide," Mr Wendt said yesterday.

"That would be extremely expensive for something that is only out of action very rarely."

Since the floods, the Transport and Main Roads Department has been looking at options to improve crossings at the Moggill Ferry and Colleges Crossing.

A department spokesman said several broader concepts had been discounted and "we will now look at a number of others to investigate their feasibility".

"Technical feasibility, cost, community impact and environmental impacts are being taken into consideration during these investigations," the spokesman said.

"At the end of the study next year, the findings will be presented to the State Government for consideration."

Mr Wendt said he didn't want to pre-empt the study's findings, but time was well and truly up for the old ferry across the Brisbane River.

"In time that's got to happen," he said.

"In the year 2011 we're still using a ferry that stops when it's dark and has to be stopped to be serviced.

"It's a pretty inefficient way of getting cars from one side of the river to the other.

"I've seen figures of $50 to $100 million where you could replace the Moggill Ferry.

"If it was the same cost to raise Colleges Crossing or replace the Moggill Ferry with a bridge, I'd prefer that.

"It would also provide easier access between Ipswich and Brisbane and it would solve a lot of transport issues as well."

The bridge at Colleges Crossing was closed from mid-December into January due to heavy rain and water releases from Wivenhoe Dam.

The bridge was under about 10m of water at the flood's peak.

Further upstream, the Mt Crosby Weir crossing on Allawah Road was also damaged.

Mr Wendt said Allawah Road would be moved and sealed as access to the new Blackwall substation near the Mt Crosby water treatment plant.

I wonder if a bridge is built if TransLink would extend the 444 to Riverview Station?  I realise it would involve travelling through a bit of nothing, but I think it would present good interchagne opportunities between Moggill/Belbowrie and the Ipswich railway line.  Although I think a Green Bridge from Bellbowrie to Riverhills and a bus continuing on to Darra Station would be even better (connect with both express and all stations trains to the City and Ipswich/Richlands trains).

also re Moggill Ferry bridge... can't they just build like a two lane bridge... that way the link is there but capacity is limited. They could even toll it to further disincend over useage.

Of course.  Problem is that the Moggillites don't want the Ipswichinians to have access to their fair suburb after dark.  If they don't want it, why spend money on them?

Question on Notice
No. 552
Asked on 16 June 2020

DR C ROWAN ASKED MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND MAIN ROADS (HON M BAILEY)

QUESTION:

Will the Minister provide patronage figures for the Moggill Ferry Service for each year, from 2015
to present, and indicate the level of government subsidy, in dollar terms, for this service for each
year?

ANSWER:

I thank the Member for Moggill for the question.

Stradbroke Ferries operates the Moggill Ferry Service under a service contract with the
Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The contract commenced 1 January 2016 and
will expire on 31 December 2020. Under the contract, TMR provides a monthly subsidy and
Stradbroke Ferries retains the revenue received from the ferry service.

The below table displays the patronage and subsidy figures for the Moggill Ferry Service from
2015 to 2020.

Financial Year Patronage Subsidy (GST exclusive)

2015–16 224,960 $571,169
2016–17 309,687 $669,387
2017–18 317,817 $688,177
2018–19 349,477 $647,028
2019–20* 334,060 $685,906

*Figures for 2019–20 are as at 31 May 2020.

So the ferry costs 0.7 million a year in subsidies. Might actually be cheaper than building a bridge...

^^They should improve the hours of operation from 6 pm to 10pm 7 days

REPLACE THE MOGGILL FERRY WITH A BRIDGE THAT IS ABOVE THE LEVEL OF EVEN THE HIGHEST FLOOD EVENT

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that the Moggill ferry be replaced with a bridge that is above any major flood level as after the floods the ferry was closed for several days. This is the way many people go on their daily commute to work and having a ferry that is so easily impacted and closed due to flooding needs to be addressed as soon as possible. While roads were still closed after the flood and the ferry closed people were left with the situation where they needed to find other ways to get where the needed to go for work or other reasons. This needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to replace the Moggill ferry with a bridge that is above the level of even the highest flood event.

FIX COLLEGES CROSSING RIVER CROSSING INFRASTRUCTURE

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the urgent need for a planned and funded flood proof river crossing infrastructure solution, at Colleges Crossing, to support the continued population growth in the suburbs of Chuwar, Karalee, Mount Crosby, and Karana Downs, and surrounding regions. Colleges Crossing is an important link between the Brisbane City and Ipswich Local Government Areas.

With Colleges Crossing regularly going under water, the wider community is affected, as they are unable to attend work causing a domino effect, with the wider community unable to receive or travel to services including school, hospital, and for essential shopping.

During flooding:

• the general community is unable to attend essential daily activities such as school, work, day care, medical appointments as well as attending social and family commitments.

• the closure of Colleges Crossing, Bells Crossing (Kholo Bridge), and the Moggill Ferry results in extra congestion on already heavily congested local and state-controlled roads of Kenmore and Moggill resulting in increased accidents/fatalities.

• families are impacted by a three hour round drive to attend work, school, day care, resulting in less quality family time; fatigue; extra fuel costs. Young children are catching a bus at 7 am and getting off the bus at 5.30 pm.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to collaborate and coordinate with all levels of Government to fix Colleges Crossing, with a flood proof river crossing solution at this specific location, that will benefit the whole community including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife.
