Having trouble finding the actual web page (threw the pollywaffle brochure out) but a new render of the station design shows....

*drum roll please*

Central raised platform humps.

On a dead straight and level platform  :frs:

Yep, there's no excuse.

Do all the preliminary works moving stuff. Make a series of pre-fab slabs that are sloping away from the platform edge. Drop them in over a weekend closure.

Move on to the next station, rinse and repeat.

InclusionMoves

Yep had raised platform humps for all so called accessible station upgrades as the norm the other day. Hence my surprise when they confirmed Central as being full length.

My guess is they will follow the same dumb approach that they did for the upgrades at Graceville and Dinmore too.

Alderley > QR's Alderley Upgrade Fail  http://brizcommuter.blogspot.com.au/2017/01/qrs-alderley-upgrade-fail.html

18 months or thereabouts of unsafe prolonged construction, at an increased cost due to the inefficient project timeline and the need for 24/7 security etc.  If they closed the stations (use bus UP and DOWN) they can get it done in around 6 weeks.  The money saved can be used to ensure all platforms raised full length and they would be able to do more stations.  The annoying thing is they know they can do that but seem to be obsessed with mediocrity and flagrant waste of OUR funds.  You might recall this is how they upgraded South Brisbane.  They closed the station to passengers and did it over 6 weeks.

There really is a dumb culture that pervades Queensland Rail, DTMR and the Ministers Offices.  Having a series of dud transport Ministers hasn't helped.

Yes I have raised this a number of times.  Seems little point talking to these clowns.  They are trapped in a treacle pool of failure!

QuoteSOUTH BRISBANE RAILWAY STATION CLOSURE JUST ONE WEEK AWAY
21/10/2011

Queensland Rail is reminding customers who use South Brisbane railway station to plan alternative arrangements in preparation for the six-week station closure beginning at the end of October.

South Brisbane station will undergo a $10 million makeover when the closure begins on October 31, as part of the State Government's City Network Station Upgrade Program.

Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Paul Scurrah said the station would re-open to customers on December 10, but the station closure would only affect customers wanting to disembark at South Brisbane, not those travelling through to other destinations.

"Commuters can access regular bus services on the nearby South East Busway at the Cultural Centre and South Bank busway stations," Mr Scurrah said.

"Affected customers travelling on a valid fare can also utilise the shuttle bus service that will run approximately every ten minutes between South Brisbane and South Bank stations."

"We are working with TransLink to minimise any disruptions for customers and apologise for the inconvenience while we undertake this essential work."

Shuttle bus stops can be found opposite South Brisbane station on Grey Street, at the Queensland Art Gallery on Stanley Street, and outside South Bank station on Tribune Street.

Go card customers should touch on and off at the start and finish of their journey, as per normal.  Passengers with paper tickets should also purchase their ticket, as they would for a normal trip.

Mr Scurrah said the work includes the restoration and preservation of the historic rail landmark, including structural maintenance, improving access for people with a disability, and upgrading general facilities.

"South Brisbane station is 120 years old and an important part of Brisbane's heritage."

"The project will include restoration work on heritage furniture, fascias and awnings, as well as the façade of the building.

"In a few weeks' time, customers will also find a new, accessible ticket office window, refurbished toilets, electronic passenger information display screens, and an upgraded subway.

The bulk of the project will be carried out during the six-week closure.  Some ongoing works will also occur in 2012, but the station will remain open to customers throughout the next phase of work.

That's the page, the flyer missed the bin. The closer render that shows the hump isn't included, but there is a launch at the station on Monday 28th.

I wonder if the people working on station upgrades at QR have the song 'My Humps' on loop....

(NB: PG13+)

Perhaps we could have an RBoT parody called "My Platform Humps"?
"My love my love my love my love
You love my platform lumps
My plat-form hump my hump
My humps they got you

She's got me spending

Oh, spending all your money upgrading
And spending 18 months on me"
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

The rainbow is such a lovely touch  ::)

Still has the platform humps, and now a multi storey car park on the site of the existing car park on the eastern side of the station.

Couriermail Quest --> 'Premium' parking lost as construction due to start at overflowing Dakabin train station

QuoteA community group has appealed for better communication as construction results in the loss of 50 parking spaces at a busy train station near Brisbane.

THE unexpected loss of an estimated 50 car parks at a chock-full train station has prompted calls for better communication from Queensland Rail north of Brisbane.

Dakabin Station Action Group (DSAG) and commuters were in for a surprise last week when a solid yellow line was painted on Thompson Rd near the station, doing away with a significant amount of parking.

With major construction due to start mid-year on a multimillion-dollar station upgrade DSAG founder Gemma Gale was concerned at what she said was a lack of notice.

"I understand that it was done to increase safety and visibility for the construction vehicles that are to appear on site soon however better communication would have eased a lot of the shock and anger," Mrs Gale said.

"My main concern is not the yellow lines themselves, it's that if communication is not functioning at this early stage between QR and its customers it could snowball out of control and cause unnecessary tension.

"When parking is already at a premium that level of removal is a notable loss and should've have been communicated beforehand.

"This particular change was not communicated to the action group nor commuters; not even the state MP was aware this work was happening."

Mrs Gale said more than 450 cars are parked at the station daily with 174 dedicated parking spaces at the facility and around 200 additional spaces available at Bob Brock Park.

But head of southeast Queensland for QR Scott Riedel said communication has been ongoing.

"QR has been engaging Dakabin station customers and key stakeholders since November 2019 regarding changes to parking arrangements starting in early 2020," Mr Riedel said.

"This included station signage, face-to-face engagement at the station, a letterbox drop to approximately 5,000 residents, email notifications and information on QR's website.

"The progressive closure of the Thompson Rd carpark from early 2020, and Moreton Bay Regional Council limiting some kerbside parking around the station precinct, are required to enable construction vehicles and trucks to safely access the site during construction."

Mr Riedel said a new 350-space, multistorey carparking facility and new bus interchange will be constructed.

He said further upgrades will include step-free access with a new footbridge with lifts, platform raising at an assisted boarding point, improved shelter and a range of accessibility features such as tactile markers and hearing aid loops.

Mrs Gale said reopening the Bob Brock Park temporary entrance from Thompson Rd would allow a quicker route to the nearest car park and adding more buses to Bob Brock Park may ease congestion during the construction period.

Couriermail Quest --> Dakabin station upgrade on the right track though bus connection still needed

QuoteWORK has begun to upgrade a decrepit train station north of Brisbane, though one key ingredient in the overall project remains missing.

Dakabin train station is a key access point to and from the North Lakes area but for years has been marred by accessibility and parking issues.

Even with the much-needed improvements to access and parking in particular, the station has never had a public bus connection to the surrounding area.

That might change though once the project is completed towards the end of next year and space is made available for a proper bus connection.

For now, the community can take heart in what could be a major boost for the growing area.

"It's an exciting day for the Dakabin community," Murrumba MP Steven Miles said at the sod turn on site today.

"They have been fighting for years to get an upgrade for the station and Shane King and I are really pleased to be deliver it.

"Accessibility here is a problem, parking here is a problem, but this project is all about fixing that and in the process, creating lots and lots of jobs for local people."

Mr Miles said that at any one time there could be up to 250 people working on the project at a time of increasing employment insecurity.

"There will be a wide range of jobs, not to mention the injection of funds into the local economy," he said.

"The impact this could have on housing values, and the ability of people to get to and from work."

In addition to the 350-space multi-level car park on the eastern side of the station, Mr King has negotiated with Transport and Main Roads for a parking upgrade on the western side, adding yet more spaces for commuters.

"On both sides of the station we've seen mums coming to take their kids to school in a pram over that inaccessible cross bridge," he said.

"This will fix all that and the community will be all smiling today."

Dakabin Station Action Group founder Gemma Gale has been lobbying for nine years to get the station upgrade done.

Now that there are shovels in the ground, the community stalwart is looking ahead to future improvements for the area.

"It's a really proud moment for me standing here today to witness the sod turn," she said.

"Hopefully now the station will be upgraded, we'll have a lot more space to include a bus interchange so people can freely move about the whole community instead of it being just a single access point.

"I'm hoping that when we finally get buses to connect through Plantation Rd, we'll have accessibility for people to North Lakes, including the Costo and Bunnings end."

The upgrade will also feature a new footbridge with lifts, raised platform sections, upgraded lighting, and security features.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey encouraged people concerned about the impact of construction to consider travelling from other stations with greater parking capacity.

"Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and inconvenience as we work to build you a better Dakabin station," he said.

Further information and updates on the upgrade can be found here.

Had to catch the train into town yesterday, first ride on an NGR (769). Seats are a bit upright, but AC was fine, brakes where quiet.

A shot of the station from Platform 1 city end, and another of the shipping container that's been converted into a big shelter.

Word is should be finished by January. Sewer and water being run at the moment from Alma Rd. Roadworks to widen Alma Rd and improve that sharp corner start in a few months too. Saw a bus go under the railway too, they do fit. Once that bend is opened up, a permanent route is possible along Alma Rd to the station.

Things have progressed dramatically in the last few weeks.

I didn't get as many pics as I hoped, as the walk took longer than I expected due to the citybound platform being only accessible from the south end, via a scaffold supported ramp. There is a heap of excavation beside the northern end of the city bound platform for the lift/stair structure. Drilling rig was in place.

Images are hi-res 4-5mb each - so links.

Platform humps are already in, and a noticeably towards one end of the station. There are retaining walls beside these humps, which would be why these where done early in the works.

No photo as I was driving, but the overbridge is now in place, was installed over the weekend.

Probably the tallest structure in Dakabin. The timber overbridge looks like a model railway one in comparison.
