Cleveland train crash - should buildings be located at the end of the tracks

01 February 2013 , 9:17 AM by Spencer Howson

Yesterday, a building at Cleveland Station, built at the end of the tracks, was destroyed by a train that was unable to stop - thankfully no one was seriously injured.

The new Ferny Grove Station (another terminus) also has its new station building in the same position and Robert Dow from Rail on Track this morning has been actively voicing his disapproval of this practice.

But first, Redland Times and Bayside Bulletin editor Brian Hurst describes the scene earlier this morning, when the first carriage was lifted by crane out of the station building:

Didn't the data point out that they still run better than the other sets even without the sanding gear?

In terms of wet weather braking performance though?

Yes, unless I read it incorrectly.

Couriermail --> State Government spends $15 million to keep trains on track

Quote... "Installation of the sanding systems on one-third of the fleet, purchased between 2007 and 2011, is expected to start by June and be complete by September 2015, at an estimated cost of $15 million," Mr Emerson said ...

Rail has always used sander/ sanders for the very obvious reasons ...

Oh dear.  lessons are sometimes forgotten?

I can remember, at the age of 5 years, making sure the sanders on the Rs up at Swan Hill were working.

It is has always been ...

Got some interesting information from Qld Rail's Facebook page from people who seem to be in the know:

1.  They aren't due to start installing them until June 2014 (why aren't they starting now?)
2. The IMUs in the accident are still being repaired.
3. SMU292 slid 500m earlier this year under testing conditions.
4.  Drivers won't be able to manually sand the rails, it will be automatically done under certain operating conditions.

And of course, QR stations with dead ends tend to be designed like Ferny Grove and Cleveland stations, with a station building built at the end of the dead end, which is a disaster waiting to happen, which it did earlier this year.

I have pics of all terminal stations.  They are nut jobs ... not QR , but TMR ... I have long argued for commonsense.

I met once with the former member for FG, to argue for a better station design for FG than what we have seen .. his comment, somewhat private was " RAIL Back On Track Robert Dow is but a burr in the saddle .. "

LOLOL where are you Jeff Geoff ?

I'm aware of some politicians saying the same thing behind closed doors as well in the years gone by!  :-r
