What's your dream project?

Let's say by some miracle of fate you have the ability to have any one transport project of your choosing be built ASAP. Assume it will be done properly, public will accept it, etc. What are you building, and why?

My personal pick is a proper, fully grade separated fast rail line from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane. Built for 200km/hr or faster, start with a tunnel from Roma St to the start of the Northwest Transport Corridor (with 2 underground platforms at Alderley for any possible transfers). Quad tracks along the entire Northwest corridor (one pair for the express, and one for local trains which could split off from FG line near Alderley). These join to a straightened and quad-tracked NCL near Bald Hills, which continues to Beerwah. Express pair then branches off and runs as straight and flat as possible until it reaches the Sunshine Coast. Just to top it all off, the line also connects the the NCL on the northern end as well, allowing Tilt Trains/future fast rail services to not be constrained by freight movements or track limitations.

Obviously this is super foamy and I doubt it's going to happen, but that's the point of this post. What would YOU do if you had the chance?
The best time to break car dependence was 30 years ago. The second best time is now.

Just gimme some bus lanes at this rate and I'll be happy FFS.

Edit: that was a vent at our current state of transport affairs, not a go at you.

Mine is an Eastern Suburbs Light Rail project. It would see a light rail route run from Woolloongabba to Capalaba. At Woolloongabba, the light rail terminus would be structured similarly to the Broadbeach station on the Gold Coast, with easy cross-platform interchange between bus and tram. Exiting the station, trams would follow the same route as busses do currently, reaching Logan road. The route continues past South City Square and Buranda station (stopping at both) before turning left and, with some modification, accessing the existing Eastern Busway viaduct before approaching Stones Corner station. The current busway infrastructure from Stones to Langlands Park could be shared by both modes. After Langlands Park, the route would largely follow the planned Eastern Busway to Carindale and beyond. I would suggest it isn't necessary to completely grade-separate this new section, as long as it has its own right of way and priority at signals.
IMO, this project could be within the realms of possibility, given it would support access to the main Olympic venues, service existing (and hopefully encourage more) high-density residential developments along Logan Rd, and be the first stage of an eventual light rail network across Brisbane.

East Coast high speed rail would be the hardest to get up so I'm running with that.

All I want for Christmas is BCC bus reform. This is actually possible to do!

#2tracks rail duplication from Beerwah to Nambour on an improved alignment that includes the elimination of the infamous Eudlo 'S' bends.

I am going to go with separated bike lanes and separated bus lanes on all major roads including bus network redesign!!

If I can do anything, then I'm asking for full tunnel maglev from Geelong to the Sunshine Coast. Chuo Shinkansen style... just bigger.

I will be serious for now ...

I think the most pressing project at this time is ETCS L2 roll out across the entire Citytrain network.

Reasons:

  • Safety
  • Improved reliability
  • Allows for higher frequencies of services
  • Will allow DOO
  • Avoids problems with interfacing different signal systems, I think we might be seeing some of this now
  • Obviously future extensions of the network will be ETCS L2 capable
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

My dream is fantastic. It is that governments do what they say they will do to improve public transport, especially rail, to the timeline committed. Out there, I know!

Is this the foamy section?

  • Fast Rail (160 km/h) to OOL with 4 tph
  • Fast Rail to MCY with 4 tph
  • Fast Rail to Rockhampton with 2 tph to Nambour, hourly to Gympie North, 2-hourly to Maryborough West and 4-hourly to Rockhampton
  • Fast Rail to Toowoomba with 2 tph

It is only foamy if we let the current infrastructure investment continue to prioritise freeways/roads over active/public transport and freight/regional rail!  This is the paradigm that needs to change!!

Europe gets it https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_21_6776

OECD gets it https://www.oecd.org/env/greening-transport/

While we're speaking of foam.
* Fast Rail to GC via the SEB Alignment, then reconnecting south of Beenleigh on their own high speed tracks.
* Fast Rail to SC via Trouts Road, then up the Bruce Highway before turning off onto the CAMCOS alignment on their own high speed tracks.

Limited stops, e.g at Garden City, Beenleigh, Helensvale then the southern terminus (Elanora or Coolangatta Airport) and for the SC (North Lakes, Caboolture East (Caboolture Turnoff), Caloundra and Maroochydore).  Connecting LR from Maroochydore to Sunshine Coast Airport.

I'd love to see bus network reform that includes deep examination of impediments to frequent trunk routes running on time. eg bus lanes, traffic light priority, remove parking, new ramps/entries into busways to avoid city street running etc.

Oh and the addition of a network of separated bicycle infrastructure on main transport roads (removing parking where necessary), including an examination of active transport lanes available for children to get to every school. With parents not needing to drive their children as often more will make different transport choices for their own trip to work.

My absolute dream would be a Brisbane Metro where you could pop up London Tube style at Brisbane City, Boundary Rd, South Brisbane, Woolloongabba, Oxford St, Racecourse Rd, The Valley, Albion, Kelvin Grove Urban Village, Ashgrove, Paddington, Milton, Toowong etc :)

The ADF and US Marine Corps conduct large scale urban warfare training, using QTMR HQ as the training area!  Everything else starts with that   :-c

By the way...that's of course TRAINING......TRAINING!!!!    :lo
SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:

Rail Rookie

On the lines of what Metro was discussing in "Kenmore Bypass" http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=14534.0

I'd have Springfield Line have its own route going through Centenary Suburbs towards, Indro, West End, Central station. I have two options that could be chosen for the line to continue on:

  • conencting to cleveland Line
  • connecting to Northshore (Hamilton)

see Map (https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1zU39S40XrN2tX-F5lwF705a85-QRpzOv&usp=sharing)

The main issue is that my proposed route doesn't connect to UQ, which isn't ideal. This is why I would either connect Indro to UQ by Metro to then follow my Metro proposed route (ignoring connection from yeronga) or I would just use busways to connect the rail line to UQ and propose a different Metro line (see earlier map) to that of what Cazza did here (https://www.google.com.au/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1Mvk9EUGgp3iEcbXfVsuqGNrMJ4RwiS-m&usp=sharing)

It would cost billions to construct, but so many areas will finally get rail (West End, New Farm/Newstead, Hawthorne, Hamilton etc.). The Cleveland Line option would cut travel from Thorneside station to Cannon Hill by ~5km and it is extended to Redland Bay. The Northshore connection option would be huge for all those areas that have massive development (as well as olympic village) already and will continue. Surely that helps when you have to digest the costs of tunneling!!
