QuoteHave your say on a new name for Brunswick Street station

Brunswick Street station has been informally known as Fortitude Valley station for many years. Over some time residents and businesses have also requested a name change to reflect the station's locality.

A major redevelopment of the station is due to be completed later this year and offers an ideal opportunity to officially rename the station "Fortitude Valley" station.

Why change it, everyone knows it as Brunswick Street and for those who don't know the name as it is tells its location.
Change for the sake of change simply is a waste of taxpayers money and accomplishes nothing other than to provide some bureaucrat with something to do in an attempt to justify his existence when he would be serving the public better by doing something constructive and productive, of courese a name change also provides a lame duck politican such as the current transport Minister with an opportunity to spend more taxpayers money in an attempt to promote himself.
Spend the money and effort on something usefull like sorting out the problems with overcrowding on trains, timetabling or the flawed and failing Go card system.

I have been thinking about this.  Spencer Street station (Victoria) was renamed to 'Southern Cross' station.
I still call it Spencer Street  ;)  Guess because I associate it with many fond memories of great adventures as we departed from Spencer Street station for long distance trips and tours around Victoria by rail, often steam hauled in my childhood.

Renaming Brunswick Street station will probably occur as there does seem local political support.

The Valley is an informal name.  Guess that will be the new official name, but many of us will no doubt just think of it as Brunswick Street as I continue to think of Spencer Street station as I  do for Southern Cross station.

Next station The Valley?

;)

It should be left as Brunswick street!! Havent our glorious leaders got anything better to do than waste funds, time and energy that would be better spent looking at ways of improving and extending the rail system for the benefit of everybody, not just to satisfy some lame penny pinching beaurocrats crazy idea!!

Speaking from someone who didn't grow up in Brisbane, "Brunswick Street" says little for the location of the station unless you know where Brunswick Street is.  Fortitude Valley is a far more logical name for the station.

Do people still call South Bank Station by its former name - Vulture Street Station?

Derwan, by that logic Fortitude Valley Station is no good because it doesn't give you an indication of where it is unless you know where Fortitude Valley is. We should rename every station to be it's UBD Grid Reference and its exact latitude and longitude in brackets. And FYI, many people still call Southbank Station Vulture Street.

What's next? Do we rename Roma Street Station to Parklands? Maybe Brisbane Transit would sound better. Or Brisbane Terminus?

Milton Station should also be renamed to Suncorp Stadium Station but only on event days.

A suburb is far more logical than a street name.  A street could be anywhere in Brisbane.  A suburb is only in one location.

Yes - my suggestion would be Brisbane Transit Centre Station.  :)

Why?  It's in Milton.  That's the most logical name for it.  Suncorp Stadium is in Milton.  It's not rocket science to work out which station to get off at.

Yes - in that scenario the station could be named either Brunswick St or Fortitude Valley.

But what if you weren't going to Brunswick Street?  If you were an outsider with no knowledge of Brisbane - and were going to a location in Fortitude Valley other than Brunswick St, what station name would you be looking for?  The logical choice would be "Fortitude Valley".

The auto station voice overs identify Brunswick Street as synonymous with China Town which sends a very quick message to the uninitiated.
I won't make the obvious suggestion ........ :-\.

From what I been told, the auto-announce re chinatown is in the Old Voice Announcement System (which is rarely, if no longer used by the guards) installed on the EMUs and SMUs.

The current VAS on the older IMUs (VAS on the 100/120s seem to be used only for Gold Coast/Airport Lines), and the VAS on the newer IMUs only announces Brunswick Street.

I will assume the VAS on the IMU160s are in use for all services, since i've heard it on a afternoon Petrie all-stations peak service, and on the Nambour services (whenever the Nambour services happen to allocated the IMU160s for the #TL** allocated runs)

What about City East, since it appears that Brunswick St is not longer fashionable tho as some previous poster has pointed out S.C. station in Melbourne will basically always be Spencer St even though technically it is City West or West Melbourne

I think Fortitude Valley would be best name, as it identifies the area.

Did you know that the Dubai metro will name some stations after sponsors? It wouldn't surprise me if that trend becomes common place!

Re: Sponsor's names maybe it will end up the queensland goverments find your 30 minutes station?

Front page article in  the mX 12 Sep 2008 confirms that the name will be Fortitude Valley

Majority of public feedback was in support of that name 55%.  The Valley was about 18%, no change about 25% according to the article.

As one would expect, signage on the almost-completed refurbishment of platforms 1 and 2 reads Fortitude Valley.   :)

Woth the Vas why is it not used on the EMUs and SMUs?
"Where else but Queensland?"
