Interesting, peak patronage for trams was 159.7 million in 1945.  Highest total patronage of 202.3 million in 1945 too.

^^Just prior to the oil and combustion car revolution.

Mass transit will be again be the mode of transport for lot of people in urban and semi regional centres, to avoid congestion and for convenience and everyday affordability.

But shows just how efficient the Brisbane tram network was.  At its peak it was carrying almost the total number of passenger today in SEQ!

Sacrificed on the altar of political expediency ... long history of that in Brisbane sadly ..  :-\

SEQ Population increase

2011:   3,012,313

2018:   3,479,852

https://profile.id.com.au/australia/population?WebID=330

This an increase of 15.5%.

A reminder of how bad public transport patronage has actually been in SEQ.  Basically because of poor frequency, poor connections, poor fares and bumbling fools in Government and its bureaucracy.

The decade of the SEQ public transport patronage fail ..

Greetings,

We have had a look at the patronage on SEQ public transport, all modes from financial years 2009/10 through to 2017/18 (1 ).

It is very enlightening and shows clearly what a mess public transport policy generally has been the past decade.

This an increase of 15.5%.  For the corresponding period public transport patronage has increased only 2.4%, and this increase was only following the introduction of the Fairer Fares package in December 2016.

Why is this the case?

One of the main reasons was the failed 5 year fare path from 2010, which followed the introduction of the go card system. Unaffordable fare increases, coupled with the loss of the periodical paper ticket products drove people off public transport.  We are very concerned that as Queensland moves to a new fare payment system history doesn't repeat.  There is a distinct lack of information and consultation with respect to the new fare system. Are we going to experience another decade of patronage stagnation or will the new fare payment system, with a fair fare structure and new options, such as periodical products and contactless payment, help grow patronage?

Associated causes of negative or low patronage growth was the failure to properly reform the Brisbane bus network in 2013.  This led to less than optimal outcomes in the Brisbane bus region itself and the wider SEQ bus regions and all regions are still experiencing poor performing bus networks, years overdue for reform.

Poor service frequency and span, all modes, with problems with connections be they rail/bus, bus/rail and bus/bus are also a factor.  As service frequency increases connections become a lot less problematical.  When low frequency rail is connecting with low frequency bus, and the connections are not made then passengers may have to wait for an hour or more for the next service.  They soon give up.

Slow progress with improvements to accessibility of infrastructure and public transport vehicles has also been a factor in our view.

Doing the same thing with the same failed policies is not going to turnaround the patronage to a true positive situation.  The one outstanding highlight of the past decade has been the introduction of the light rail on the Gold Coast. This is the standard. Unfortunately, the rest is rather dire.

Figures (food) for thought?

Best wishes,

Robert

That rapid increase in bus patronage from 2000 onwards can be put down to the implementation of the BUZ network. This clearly shows that frequency is freedom and that high frequency services are the easiest way in getting people onto PT.

I just checked my files from a forum we held in 2010. Alan Warren who then was Divisional Manager Brisbane Transport reported that the reasons the bus patronage doubled between 1999 and 2010 was because the introduction of the BUZ services, and the progressive introduction of the busways as the two key factors. The diagram below shows the growth in patronage on the upgraded BUZ routes (taken from Mr Warren's lecture presentation).
