AN Ipswich teenager has racked up more than $1600 in fines this year by trying to save a few dollars by riding the train for free.

Tyrone William Richard Power, 19, fronted the Ipswich Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer his 11th charge of evading a train fare since January.

Prosecutor Jo Coulston said Power was arrested and charged by police moments after he boarded a train without a ticket at Wacol, 20km southwest of Brisbane, on September 16.

Constable Coulston said Power had been charged with fare evasion 10 times this year before yesterday's court appearance.

The court was told that each time Power was fined the standard $150.

Power told acting magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist he had not paid any of the penalties. Mr Stjernqvist fined him $150.
