Farewelling Queensland's first electric train

After four decades in service, it's time to farewell the state's first electric train, 'EMU01', as it takes to the tracks for the very last time this Sunday (11 August).

To mark its retirement, Queensland Rail is hosting special services from 9-11 August, in which EMU01 will embark on journeys across the South East Queensland network for a final time.

EMU01 made its debut in 1979. Many Queenslanders will still remember the day, on 4 September 1979, when the state's first electric train made its debut at Roma Street station, as testing of the newly electrified track commenced.

Following months of testing and a special weekend of festivities, the EMU trains went on to commence timetabled services for the very first time on 19 November 1979, with EMU01 embarking on Queensland's first timetabled electric train journey, from Ferny Grove station through to Darra.

On Sunday, 11 August 2019, EMU01, paired with EMU04, will re-enact its first timetabled passenger journey from 1979, travelling from Ferny Grove to Darra station.

Queensland Rail customers and members of the public are invited to come along to a farewell event at Ferny Grove station to celebrate EMU01's final day in service.

The event will start at 9.30am, with EMU01, paired with EMU04, to arrive at the station at 9.36am and be on display on Platform 2, prior to departing Ferny Grove at 10.17am, stopping all stations to Darra.

I'm doing the Cleveland return, I've noticed the auto announcements are disabled. I'll guess it's to make it a bit more like it was 40 years ago.

Farewell EMU 01

Good Morning,

This weekend Queensland Rail have celebrated the retirement of class leader EMU 01 with a weekend tour of a number of Citytrain lines.

Yesterday I boarded EMU 01 at Goodna for the final revenue service to Ipswich, and return.  It was pleasing to note the passengers going for a final ride on this champion.  Rail and public transport enthusiasts a plenty, and many passengers with perhaps not the keen interest of the aforementioned but wanting to be part of this chapter of Citytrain history.

Today (11th August 2019) at Ferny Grove, commencing at 9.30am there will be a farewell event before EMU 01/04 will re-enact the first timetabled passenger journey that was on the 17th November 1979 from Ferny Grove to Darra Station.  The train will depart Ferny Grove at 10.19am for Darra, and will return from Darra to Ferny Grove at 11.46am.  This afternoon the final revenue service for EMU 01 will be a journey to the Gold Coast.  See https://www.queenslandrail.com.au/aboutus/mediacentre/farewelling-queenslands-first-electric-train for detailed timetables.

The Queensland Rail Citytrain EMU fleet have been the mainstay of our suburban rail network in SEQ for 40 years.  Arguably, one of the best electric multiple unit (EMU) trains to have been built in Australia. They were manufactured by Walkers Limited, Maryborough Queensland for Queensland Rail between 1979 and 1986.  It is sad to see them being decommissioned, but we thank Queensland Rail CEO Mr Nick Easy and all staff for arranging this very appropriate farewell event.

Outstanding!

Best wishes,

Robert

At Ferny Grove now. Mix of train fans, QR/Govt people and extremely confused punters.

(FG has markets in the station car park on Sunday mornings.)

EMU 01 yet to arrive.

9:26 All the rail fans psyched out by the arrival of EM 49 and 46 for the 10:02 run. Read the PIDs, folks. 01 can't get here until the 9:32 departs.

9:42 well, it's been here for a few minutes now. ALL of the photos being taken.

See you at Darra.  I hope to be there for the arrival at 11.22am.

I'll be off before Darra, sadly - but I will at least be making it past Milton, so I get the movement through the City.

Haha yes, I arrived on EMU49 and was confused by all the people taking video/photo of it lol. Just about to arrive Alderley.

Edit: basically a full seated load in car 301, there's a few empty seats but enough standees to fill them. Not sure about loads in other cars or EMU04.

EMU 01 now ' retired '

Good Morning,

Feedback on the weekend activities by Queensland Rail for the ' retirement ' of EMU 01 and the fact that the EMUs are being decommissioned has been overwhelming positive even if tinged with a little sadness at the inevitable loss from regular service of these Queensland trains.

Interesting comparison - with a recent retirement announcement in the UK:

https://www.railpage.com.au/news/s/first-pacer-train-withdrawn-from-northern-service

1979 to 2019 (40 years) - 12,000,000 KM

to

1987 to 2019 (32 years) - 5,000,000 KM
