Media Release
Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

Kan-go service upgrading to On Demand Transport

A new and improved on-demand bus service is coming to Hervey Bay on Monday, February 20.

The existing 714 Kan-go service will be upgraded to a Translink On Demand service, with a widened coverage area and continuous service during operating hours (7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday).

Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said on demand transport aims to bring together people who are looking to travel at the same time, picking them up near their homes and taking them to and from selected locations.

"This is fantastic news for local in Hervey Bay," Mr Tantari said.

"One of the big improvements to this service is the inclusion of Hervey Bay Hospital into the on demand operating area.

"The expanded operating area will make it easier for locals in Point Vernon and parts of Pialba and Hervey Bay, who want to travel to places like Stocklands shopping centre and the hospital, to get around.

"These changes are on the back of community feedback, to deliver better services for locals.

"In particular this is great for some of our older residents to help them get around the community without the need to drive.

"It will be easy for customers to look out for their service with newly branded buses and the introduction of real-time tracking allowing users to track the arrival of their service.

"Phone, website and app booking options will be maintained, with the new booking phone number now 13 12 30."

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said there are changes to the way the service operates, aligning it closely to the successful northern Gold Coast on demand transport which runs services based on customer demand.

"The On-Demand Transport trial on the Gold Coast has been a roaring success so far and we've received a lot of positive feedback about it," Mr Bailey said.

"So, it makes sense to role out a similar model in other locations like we are doing here in Hervey Bay.

"There's been a strong demand for the Kan-Go service in Hervey Bay, so I'm excited to see the Palaszczuk Government again delivering better services for the region."

With the service operating on an on-demand basis, the changes do require users to book the service for each journey to get to and from their destination.

The upgrade to a more responsive bus service based on where and when customers need to travel means the Kan-go fixed route is no longer offered, however there are other bus services operating along the previously serviced fixed route.

More information on how on demand transport works is available at  translink.com.au/ondemand or by calling 13 12 30.
