Unsure if posted elsewhere,
Emus 62 and 64 have been withdrawn from revenue service as of yesterday and are currently stabled in the banyo stabling yards until such time they are taken off tracks. Couldn't find an appropriate thread to post this, apologies.

FYI

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_multiple_unit_%28Queensland_Rail%29

On 21 September 2001 a freight train derailed near Petrie and collided with two empty EMUs, EMU05 and EMU60. Two carriages from EMU05 and one carriage of EMU60 were badly damaged and scrapped. The remaining three carriages were combined and returned to service as EMU60. EMU carriages EM160, EM205 and EM105, were not repairable and EMU05 was the first unit to be withdrawn from service. The current EMU60 is made out of carriages EM305 (Renumbered EM160), 260 and 460.

It does concern me a bit that EMUs are already being withdrawn with 3 car sets still being run during peak hour.  :fp: :fp: :fp:

ozbob

^ it is bit of a worry.  We need to see how many more.  It is possible that these units are ones that have been giving a lot of problems so with a little bit of slack now with the NGRs they have decided to put them out of service.

If it gets too far down the track and a legal injunction against the NGRs happens where will we be then?  Adelaide will look good hey?  :P

It looks like the ones being withdrawn first are the single-ended sets which I believe only have 6 motors as opposed to eight in the other EMUs. I wonder if this contributed to them wearing out faster?

jesse

I'm told that 62/64 are to be transferred from the Banyo yards (where it currently resides) to Redbank workshops some time next week...

Wont be surprised if a loco pops them outside next to the NGR's being stabled at Redbank. Interesting to note that 702 has been moved back to Wulkuraka in the past couple days. Coincidence?

ozbob

Thanks Jesse.  Might pop down to Redbank Workshops today to get a happy snap of the two lone rangers .. before they are joined by the EMUs.

The EMU aren't going to be stored at Progress Rail Redbank, Bob.

EMU62/64 still at Banyo as of today. Along with the ICE set.

TheJAG

According to the EMU/ICE appreciation group, units 65 and 68 were towed to Banyo today. I guess 62/64 are still there as well?

Otto

EMU's 63 and 77 are now removed from service as well as ICE 153 & 157 I have been told.

So how many ICE sets are in service still?

TheJAG

ICE set 152/158 is still going strong (actually caught 7158 tonight). Saw 153/156 only last week. Haven't seen 154/157 & 151/155 for a few months now. Will keep an eye out for 63/77, spotted the latter only two days ago (but things can change quickly). Thanks for the heads-up Otto.

Wouldn't be the first thing to fall off a train.
Bob is always finding things that fall off the coal trains around his part of town.  :D

Happened to be heading passed Elimbah this afternoon.

Couldn't get numbers as not visible from the road (and driving) but the ICE was there, as well as two EMU (one a bandicoot) and an NGR. Caboolture north west yard was empty, perhaps why the two EMU's at Elimbah.

Have heard 63/77 and 64/74 being kept as backup due to Bombardier not able to keep supply up for peak services.

How can that be when Ngrs only run on the Gold Coast  - Airport  line? Emus haven't operated to the Gold coast for a while and very rarely to the Airport. Unless they need them for the Doomben line?

Obviously won't be direct coverage. They'll take an IMU, service from somewhere else to cover the NRG then use the EMU to cover that. My source says this will be only as a very last resort though and this will continue to be the case for up to 6 months.

I'd have thought many of the EMU units had a good few years left in them! Still pretty solid work-horses!
We're going to be short of trains if they ever do REALLY build CRR and want to run, what a Sydney/Melbourne, would see as say a mid 1980's timetable!!!
SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:

They're starting to come to the end of there 10yr overhaul period. QR doesn't want to spend the money overhauling them again. The NGR implementation really has cocked up the retirement process.

EMUs 77 47* and EMUs 74 66 spotted in the northern section of Mayne Yard, north of the Ferny Grove flyover.
Pantographs were lowered like they've been put out to pasture.

* couldn't get a good look at this one.

PoliticalFootball

AFAIK they're 'grounded' not retired for the afore mentioned reason.

I'm in EM160 (EMU 60 mentioned earlier), it doesn't look far from being withdrawn. Paint is badly peeling on the door, carpets are a mess, one light flickering and there is vandal scratching on every windows.

Needs to go the same way as the BTQ07 tower at Mt Cootha which is scheduled for dismantling soon.

I'm in 160 now and they must have fixed that liight at least...
And there's scratchings on pretty much every window on every train
Do I really need to clarify?
Sarcasm and rhetorical questions don't translate perfectly into written form, do they?

Hahahaha. And as I say this ICE156 is dead in the water north of glasshouse mountains. ATP is also being triggered with all crew now in the cab keeping the train running. Crew are to disable the door soon. Bad luck for anyone wanting to use Traverston tonight haha. Edit: train is under way but is now dead again just south of Landsborough.

A couple have been been retired. They need to pass inspection to renter revenue service.

PoliticalFootball

^^ Yes. 20 odd EMUs now retired/grounded etc. Has happened a bit quicker than expected.

Not great news for the maintenance sheds.

Similar discussions on another forum.

I think I've gotten my wires crossed. The EMU and ICE are to be retired, are any of the later fleet going too?

And Wikipedia quotes the October QR gazette as saying EMU06 has gone to scrap out back of Ipswich. It's not a public publication though from what I find.
