THE Baillieu government has cleared the way for a new residential community to be built in Melbourne's outer south-east.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy yesterday announced approval of a development at Clyde North to build up to 6600 houses on more than 400 hectares of land, creating homes for 18,500 people.

It will include four small retail precincts, several schools and a local town centre.

Mr Guy said the move was necessary to cope with the vast influx of people moving to Melbourne. ''The [plan] will guide the development of quality residential development and cater for Melbourne's expanding population, which is growing by more than 1300 residents a week," he said.

A Bus Association study last month showed that in the past seven years about 160,000 people had moved to homes on Melbourne's fringe that are still not within walking distance of public transport.

Opposition planning spokesman Brian Tee said Mr Guy's move looked set to continue the creation of new town centres without providing adequate infrastructure. ''[All these] people and no funding for public transport or schools is a plan for more congestion, pollution and frustration on Melbourne's roads.''

There is a major transport crisis around the bend, in many many places ...  the fools continue to ignore the best advice from transport planners and roll over for developers ...

FFS, when will they listen. Sydney is the only city getting rail out to these areas and its still a mess. 400 hectares of land for 6600 homes is pathetic. How big is the RNA show grounds and they are getting 3000 residents who mill enjoy a higher standard of living than these people.

That's approx. 606 sq metre (average) allotments.

still to big though. what is the obsession with massive backyards, Ive lived on average and a house with a plunge pool and terrace and the latter was much more enjoyable, not mention no mowing

I'd consider 600 sq. metres tiny.
I have a family of 4 kids and a big backyard is perfect.
But that's me.

Plot sizes in the Fitzgibbon UDA that I have seen are in the range of 400m2, which is quite reasonable for detached housing in a mid-range to outer suburb.

The key is not forcing everybody into one housing paradigm (ie flats or bust), but ensuring there is an adequate supply of both to allow freedom of choice.  Currently, that is very limited in Australia because apartments have always been seen popularly as dogboxes and not something to aim for - plus, releasing empty unallocated land in woop-woop is "cheaper" for the government using non-holistic/externalising economics than making sure the inner city works properly for good densities.
