Perth rail passengers remain most satisfied

Whether you take the train to school, work, or just for leisure, Australians expect their metropolitan rail networks to operate reliably and efficiently. But we don't live in a perfect world and very few rail networks across the globe could come even close to claiming a perfect service. Australia is no different, but Canstar Blue's passenger ratings over the years have highlighted a gulf in satisfaction between those who use the country's five major metropolitan train networks. Nearly two and a half years on from our last review, we have once again taken a snapshot of Australia's satisfaction – or dissatisfaction – with their city trains. This is what we found.

Based on more than 4,400 survey responses – from adults that have used a metropolitan train service in the last six months – city trains were rated in the following order for overall satisfaction:

1st TransPerth
2nd Adelaide Metro
3rd Queensland Rail
4th Sydney Trains
5th Metro Trains (Melbourne)

It is the sixth year in succession that Perth's rail service has been rated highest overall. No other network has ever finished higher in Canstar Blue's research. However, some other networks have performed better in specific areas, which we'll come to shortly.

City trains: what matters most

In addition to rating the five city train networks on customer satisfaction, the survey also reveals the main 'drivers' of passenger satisfaction. The regression analysis found that service reliability is the biggest factor in determining the satisfaction of Australian rail passengers, followed by:

Timetable/scheduling
Cost (ticket prices)
Trip comfort
Safety (at stations and on trains)
Train/station cleanliness
Ticketing system

Of course, all factors are important in their own way, and the importance of these variables is likely to be impacted by the type of rail passenger (e.g. daily commuter vs. weekend traveller).

Transperth is a very good suburban rail network, it has reliability, frequency and good support from the bus network. I have been over to Perth a number of times in the past few years and always enjoy the rail journeys. I was in Adelaide in January this year, an improving rail network. There is not much difference in the Canstar Blue ratings in actual fact between Adelaide Metro and Queensland Rail Citytrain. Both Sydney and Melbourne have had some issues of late, and Melbourne has had a few years now of major disruptions due to the extensive level crossing removal works and upgrades for the high capacity trains. So no great surprise it is down a little.

Melbourne does get a lot of delays daily as well from broken down trains (especially on very hot days where it seems to bring the rail network down there to a standstill), through to general delays.  One thing I did note when I was last in Melbourne is how bumpy the ride is on the track down there, Qld Rail and Adelaide's rail I found to be very smooth compared to Melbourne.  I'm guessing due to more maintenance done?

You would want to expect a good ride in Adelaide, basically the whole system has been rebuilt over the past decade.

I'm going down at Easter, hoping to finally ride an electric train.  Last trip the traction system was out on the weekend and I got treated to a 3100 class to Seaford - very poor ride quality and no higher than 80km/h which I attribute to the train and not the track.

The line to Grange is still a bit rough in places but the rest of the Adelaide Metro network track is good. The track around Melbourne is getting better but still the worst of them all.
QR do track well as do Perth, good quality 3'6".

Sydney has always been better quality track than Melbourne for as long as I can remember.

Nine News are doing a story on this survey. I was just interviewed at Corinda rail. I am on the school run today. Hot day! Presently having a nice ice coffee at Eliza's Place cafe. 🍧
