The New [NextGen] Roma Street Station

It's likely, that in the next decade, the opportunity to build a new Roma St Station will present itself....I'm interested in hearing from others, their thoughts and suggestions, based on their own experiences, both locally and around the world, on what they'd like to see included in the "NextGen" Roma Street, a station that honours the past, includes new features used at some of the worlds great railway hubs and finally gives Brisbane a major rail [public transit generally] hub, for its 21st Century, metro, regional and long-distance services needs.

Only by getting our ideas down, discussing the issues and challenges, can we, when the time is right, campaign for the type of major rail hub that will best serve Brisbane and produce a key piece of enduring rail infrastructure.

The thing about Roma St is that for the most part it's an interchange station. Given its position in the CBD and in the network, that won't be changing anytime soon.

I would like to see the food court space used better. The problem is that it's massively out of the way. I wonder if it could be integrated with platform 1...

At the very least I'd like some PSDs on that level.

The streetscaping is also bad; getting to and from the 412 stop is less than intuitive, heck, just getting into the building is less than intuitive. (Admittedly Central isn't much better, but at least it has the walkways under Ann St.)

I'm not familiar enough with the CRR proposal to comment on what that'd do.

It would be great if they built a canopy over the rebuilt Roma Street Station. Also, the coach terminal should be placed underneath.  There should be a full-sized shopping mall with major retail chains as well as decent cafes to make the area much more vibrant. The rebuild should aim to have an open ambience with a focus on natural light.  A big state with a decentralised population needs a decent intrastate/interstate transit hub.

Wheelchair access and level boarding across the network before doing anything to Roma St.


For Roma St, the main things would be developing towers, shifting the coaches to ground level to get rid of that huge spiral ramp, and perhaps better pedestrian links to Petrie Terrace.

The most important thing is to remember it is actually a station and to make it as functional as possible - level boarding, easy transfers, access from both sides 24 hours etc.  Window-dressing can follow.

I feel like a short term fix could be (as Aldonius said) just improved signage (especially on the Roma St entrance) as I myself have walked through the wrong door on multiple occasions. As it is supposed to be a "Transit Centre", both locals and tourists do find it confusing as to where the station actually is.

The transit center is also owned by another mob so any outside works are difficult because..... they don't own it.

The best solution would be total demolition and rebuild to world class standards seen in Europe, while also incorporating into the Brisbane Live plans.

I believe the current owner of the property is not unsympathetic to idea of "significant project" being undertaken, in fact, it's been floated a couple of times over the years.

^^St Pancras station in London is magnificent, some ideas could be taken from there. The current owner of Roma Street Transit Centre not really spending money on the retail areas of the building. I assume they are awaiting the final plans. I am under the impression that the Transit centre will be demolished and the heritage building on Platform 3 retained.
