Queensland Parliament E-Petition

STOP PROPOSED TOOWOOMBA NORTH SOUTH TRANSPORT CORRIDOR

https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/Work-of-the-Assembly/Petitions/Petition-Details?id=3924

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland Citizens draws to the attention of the House that the proposed Toowoomba North South Transport Corridor will see homes, livelihoods, agriculture, wildlife, First Nations sites and the environment at large negatively affected. It is poorly designed, environmentally destructive and does not reflect community needs or values. The chosen route does not address any issues surrounding the growth of the region and seeks to divide the sense of community fostered over generations. Further, the lack of government consultation has been an egregious failure causing unnecessary anxiety and stress to all of those in the Darling Downs region. The State Government's inadequate consultation period has not followed standard practice guidelines, seeing many impacted landowners without official communication for at least a week, if not more, into the already short consultation process. The government has failed to produce any evidence or alternatives to this corridor to the community and has presented it in direct disregard of local concerns. It is a clear violation our community's right to fair and transparent leadership.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to terminate the current proposed transport corridor route with immediate effect and restart the entire process in direct and visible consultation with the impacted Darling Downs Communities, granting a minimum six month community consultation period to allow for effective feedback.

The much-loathed Toowoomba North-South transport corridor ended up costing more than $2.7m before it was scrapped late last year.

Transport Minister Bart Mellish revealed the new figure in response to a question asked in parliament by Toowoomba North MP Trevor Watts, with much of the cost based around engineering services and running the highly-criticised community consultation.

The figures come four months after the state government trashed plans for a new transport corridor, which was reviled by the community. ...
