Return of the Leongatha to Melbourne Passenger Trains on the South Gippsland Rail Corridor

QuoteThe people of South Gippsland in Victoria's south east have been left in the dark by the Victorian government when it comes to effective public transport solutions since the rail passenger service to Leongatha ceased on July 24 1993. Study after study have concluded that it is 'feasible' to reopen the railway line for both passenger and freight services, however, the continuation of the growing cost of rebuilding the line over the years due to a lack of maintenance has deterred previous state governments from delivering this essential public transport service to those who live in the Casey, Cardinia, Bass Coast, Wellington and South Gippsland shires.

Support the return of the Leongatha passenger rail service!

Given the capacity constraints on the Dandenong corridor and the lack of any significant growth south east of Carnbourne I can't see this ever getting legs.

Too true.  Maybe a 'shuttle' from the existing terminus (ala Stony Pt.)

Victoria has progressively re-established passenger services to a number of locations.  Not beyond the realms of possiblity this.  Connections with other V/Liners at Dandenong is also an option, although initially a shuttle into Cranbourne would suffice.  Part of the line is actually still there, not a major major effort to get it open.  Nyora <-> Leongatha is presently operated by South Gippsland Railway as a heritage effort.

'Rail Revival On Track'
Chris Cantlon
Melbourne

12 Oct 2014 — To all supporters, the South and West Gippsland Transport Group's campaign to return trains to Leongatha (South Gippsland) has gathered greater momentum as the lobby group featured in issue 20 of 'The Lifestyle Magazine' - Gippsland for Spring 2014 that was released earlier this month. The article that is 'Rail Revival On Track' by Chris West includes 4 pages outlining the group's steps that it will take towards getting rail back on the agenda for South Gippsland as well as highlighting the significance of this vital piece of infrastructure for the region in the future. A link to this article is included below this message, which you can download to share with others.

Recently, the Victorian Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure re-released their updated South Gippsland Planning Scheme. In section 21.12 of the document, which is Transport, the overview of the report states that: "Future opportunities such as the reopening of the South Gippsland railway for freight transport". Under section 21.12-1 in the Further strategic work actions, it is stated that the Department will continue to be, "Reviewing the significance of the Melbourne to Leongatha railway line". Continue to spread the word about our campaign and remember that if you are interested in the latest developments of returning rail to South Gippsland, then either make contact with our Facebook page or the South and West Gippsland Transport Group.

Regards, Chris Cantlon
