Centenary Glider

http://itsyourbrisbane.com/commitments/centenary-glider/

None of the 15 bus services in the Centenary suburbs are frequent, with many only hourly after 7pm and much of the weekends. Few buses connect with the train, even though it's a great connection to the CBD, Ipswich and Springfield. Repeated calls from locals and public transport groups for a fast regular service have been ignored.

It's not just the inner city that should benefit from council's Glider services. Your Green Team in council would introduce a Centenary Glider that would connect Centenary suburbs with the Ipswich and Springfield rail lines, shopping centres, business hubs, schools and the CBD.

High frequency bus services are key to reducing congestion. People choose not to drive if they know busses come regularly and they can get home easily at most hours. This service would put a serious dent in congestion on Milton Road, Moggill Road and the start of the Western Freeway.

The best news is that this would not cost ratepayers an extra cent. The Greens in council would work with Translink to replace 7 local services with this exceptionally better Glider service. This is a perfect example of how simple bus network reform can benefit a whole region of Brisbane and reduce pressure on our congested road system.

Service details:

The Centenary Glider would go from Darra train station to the Cultural Centre
It would pass through Riverhills, Middle Park, Westlake, Jamboree Heights, Mt Ommaney and Jindalee, onto the Centenary Highway and connecting to Fig Tree Pocket, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, Toowong, Roma St and King George Square
Stops would be approximately 800 metres apart
It would leave every five minutes during peak times and every 10-15 minutes off peak
It would operate 18 hours a day, 24 hours a day on Friday and Saturday

Greens hit the mark, again, with Centenary Glider policy commitment

Greetings,

The Greens Lord Mayor Candidate, Mr Ben Pennings has released a policy committment for a Centenary Glider.

We too have proposed a similar service previously.  This is sensible no cost bus reform.  The sort of thing that Brisbane needs desperately to fix the broken bus network

The Greens proposal is:

None of the 15 bus services in the Centenary suburbs are frequent, with many only hourly after 7pm and much of the weekends. Few buses connect with the train, even though it's a great connection to the CBD, Ipswich and Springfield. Repeated calls from locals and public transport groups for a fast regular service have been ignored.

Excellent. Looks like they were waiting for the paper's publication to formally launch this one.

Its a very good route best of both worlds! Feeder bus and Buz. 👍🚌
Oh I guess being a glider the night link service is bi directional. 👍

Can basically replace nine bus routes (450, 452, 453, 454, 455, 456, 457, 458, 459) and carry loads in both directions in peak.

And given all those buses it's replaced, and probably increased fare revenue, it should be almost cost neutral.

The new Council and Translink best to implement this from July 1 2016. Its an exciting step forward in bus reform. Plus making the Vic Bridge Green for extra capacity 🚌👍

Couriermail Quest --> High-frequency bus service touted for Centenary suburbs

QuoteA HIGH-FREQUENCY bus route servicing the southwest would increase connectivity and promote public transport, according to The Greens' mayoral candidate.

Ben Pennings said the Centenary suburbs had been calling for a frequent bus service.

"None of the 15 bus services in the Centenary suburbs are frequent, with many only hourly after 7pm," he said.

"Few buses connect with the train, even though it's a great connection to the CBD, Ipswich and Springfield.

Mr Pennings said the "Centenary Glider" would connect suburbs with the Ipswich and Springfield rail lines, shopping centres and business hubs at Toowong and Indooroopilly, schools and the CBD.

"High-frequency bus services are key to reducing congestion," he said. "People choose not to drive if they know buses come regularly and they can get home easily at most hours."

Mr Pennings said transport was a key election issue ahead of the March 19 vote.

LNP Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is advocating the conversion of the Inner Northern Busway and South East Busway to "rubber-tyred metro" between Herston and Woolloongabba.

ALP candidate Rod Harding is proposing a light rail system running from Newstead to West End, and possibly the University of Queensland via new bridge.

Route details:

The Centenary Glider would travel between Darra Station and the Cultural Centre and run every five minutes during peak hours. It would pass Riverhills, Middle Park, Mt Ommaney and Jindalee, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre and Toowong.

Brisbane Bus Reform: Greens announce New CityGlider to Centenary Suburbs

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers welcomes The Greens Lord Mayor Candidate Ben Pennings pledge for a new CityGlider to the Centenary Suburbs.

The Green's CentenaryGlider begins at Darra station and would connect the Centenary Suburbs, Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, Toowong and run along Coronation Drive before entering the Brisbane CBD.

Services would be frequent, running every 10-15 minutes all day, and every 5 minutes in peak hour. During Friday and Saturday nights, CentenaryGlider services would run 24 hours. As for the cost, the proposal is effectively cost-neutral, funded by reforming existing local bus services.

No other candidates have proposed new or improved bus services for Brisbane residents. Instead, Rod Harding and Lord Mayor Graham Quirk have decided to entertain the public with 'votebait' proposals, designed to attract headline attention but then quickly fail once the election has passed.

For example, Brisbane City Council does not own State-Government controlled busways or depot land for Lord Mayor Graham Quirk to deliver his metro proposal, and challenger Rod Harding's Light Rail idea would be so expensive it would require federal funding, joining the long queue of unfunded and languishing proposals submitted to the Australian Government.

Indeed, four weeks out from election day, ALP candidate Rod Harding still has not told us where his Light Rail proposal will run, or whether the critical indicators of project success, the cost-benefit and net present value metrics stack up against improved bus services.

Not exactly encouraging is it?

In contrast, bus reforms are deliverable and affordable. Congratulations to The Greens providing a sensible policy that is financially, socially and environmentally responsible.

Bus Reform: Gold Coast already doing what Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says can't be done

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web-based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers calls on Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and the Minister for Transport Stirling Hinchliffe to reform the Brisbane bus network

There are now multiple Gold Coast bus services that run between train and tram stations, requiring passengers to connect. It's a direct contradiction of what Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and Brisbane City Councillors continually say isn't possible in Brisbane.

Examples on the Gold Coast include:

704 (Helensvale - Seaworld via Southport)
    709 (Helensvale Station-Southport LRT)
745 (Nerang Station - Broadbeach LRT)
    740 (Nerang Station- Surfers Paradise)
750 (Robina station - Bond University - Broadbeach LRT)

Despite all of these bus services running between train stations and tram stations, 'forcing' connections, Gold Coast bus patronage has increased. And it has done so in the same high-fares environment Brisbane City Council buses operate in. Brisbane does not have light rail, but it does have busways and train stations that could serve the same purpose.

International cities have a similar approach, notably Vancouver (Canada) and Toronto (Canada). And more recently, Auckland (NZ) and Houston (USA) have done entire network redesigns, also adopting this approach.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and Brisbane City Council are simply wrong on bus reform. They're wrong. And they know it because their own Lord Mayor's Mass Transit Report told them so.

The Lord Mayor and Brisbane City Council should stop obstructing bus reform. Fix the bus black-hole areas in Yeronga, Bulimba, Albany Creek and the Centenary suburbs. Introduce a new BulimbaGlider to Bulimba, and a CentenaryGlider to the Centenary suburbs."

Our New Bus Network Proposal shows how it can be done ---> http://tiny.cc/newnetwork

Only genuine reform of rail and bus networks, together with fare reform will guarantee abundant and low-cost public transport for all.

TransLink Bus Route 740. Passengers interchange at both ends of this service.

The Greens put this out last year. Rather than lobby for the gov to do something, they should propose their own policies.

Disagree wholeheartedly. In fact, I endorse the Greens' stance here. They're doing the sensible thing and staying out of the mess that is toll roads and public transport fares. I do not think Brisbane traffic is at the level where we need to even consider CBD congestion charging, not to mention any such proposal is electoral suicide.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Petrol prices are down because of the OPEC cartel has been broken (less tax revenue) and cars are ditching petrol altogether (less tax revenue).

Only will be a matter of time before revenue constraints force a change.
