Brisbanetimes --> Labor turns attention to cyclists

QuoteLabor's Brisbane City Council campaign has gone pedal-powered, with two new commitments for the city's cyclists.

Lord mayoral candidate Rod Harding said a Labor administration would commit $1.5 million from the existing $49 million bikeway budget to a protected bike lane on Sylvan Road at Toowong ...

... In addition, Mr Harding said a Labor administration would create a central bicycle users group to act as an advisory panel on cycling matters.

The Lord Mayor's Bicycle Users Group, he said, would be made up of a representative from each of the eight bicycle users groups active across Brisbane and would meet at least 10 times a year.

"I want to see more people riding to work, riding to school and seeing the sites of Brisbane by bike," Mr Harding said.

"But for that to happen we need to make it safer to ride in Brisbane.

"We also need to plan better for bikeways in the first place which is what a new Lord Mayor's Bicycle Users Group will help with.

"The Lord Mayor's Bicycle Users Group will advise on priorities for cyclists, particularly in terms of safety concerns.

"They will also be an important point of reference for consultation on the design of Brisbane bikeways."
