The Advertiser --> Seaford and Belair train lines to close for maintenance on several days over summer

QuoteTWO train lines on the Adelaide network will temporarily close for several days over the holiday season for essential maintenance upgrades.

Buses will replace trains on the Belair and Seaford lines when they close on various dates in December and January.

The full length of the Seaford line will be closed on December 27 and 28 after 8pm.

This will be followed by two full-day closures on January 2 and 3, to replace faulty electrical wiring which has caused two failures on the line since 2014.

Engineering firm Laing O'Rourke's region director Pat Cashin confirmed it was supplied with a faulty batch of catenary wire and would replace it at no additional cost.

A partial line closure between Brighton and Seaford will also mean buses replace train services between January 4 and 25.

The closure of the Belair line, from midnight on Christmas Day until the first service on

the December 30, will coincide with the shutdown of the parallel freight track operated by the Australian Rail Track Corporation.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said the closures were being

timed to coincide with quieter periods on the rail network.

"This will take much longer than previously estimated and to minimise risks to ongoing

services, the closure in January will reduce the chances of ongoing interruptions to

commuters," Mr Mullighan said.

Works on the Belair line include the stabilisation of an embankment at Coromandel, signal and

communication cable testing, and civil works at three level crossings in preparation for cable

replacement.

"This will deliver better train services and smoother rides, as well as contributing to bushfire

prevention measures around the rail line," Mr Mullighan said.

Full train services are expected to be restored by Australia Day.
