Couriermail Quest --> Brisbane City Council increases AM bus services to cater to increased morning demand

QuoteMORE early morning Brisbane City Council bus services will begin next month.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the additional services on its Bus Upgrade Zone (BUZ) routes were a result of savings made by the council in running its fleet.

Despite bus figures released last month which showed a slump in patronage, Cr Quirk said early morning services including Mogill's 444 service, were reaching capacity.

"The BUZ network already provides Brisbane commuters with high frequency public transport from a number of key locations to the CBD between around 6am and 11.30pm Monday to Friday," Cr Quirk said.

"These new services will accommodate the needs of the growing number of Brisbane residents starting their work day outside of peak commuting hours.

"We have already seen considerable patronage growth on the existing early morning services across a range of routes.

"For example, an average of 51 passengers takes the 444 Moggill bus service at 5.40am on weekdays, which has demonstrated the ongoing need for more services around that time."

Cr Quirk said the new services would provide capacity for more than 3500 passenger each week and 180,000 yearly.

"Many people are working more flexible hours starting work earlier and finishing earlier so this provides greater flexibility while encouraging people that might not be using bus services because they don't start early enough to meet their needs," Cr Quirk said.

It followed a council report released last month which showed bus passenger numbers had dropped by 2.2 million year on year.

The council then said it was up to the State Government to make fares more affordable for Brisbane residents.

ALP Opposition Leader Milton Dick said the council was simply playing catch-up.

"While all new early services are welcomed, I am concerned that all we are now doing is plugging the holes caused by the $20m ripped out of public transport by the Lord Mayor in 2014," Cr Dick said.

"This is nothing more than a smoke and mirrors trick by the Lord Mayor, with these new services paid for as a result of him putting 120 less buses on the road this term.

"We know millions of passengers each year in Brisbane are jumping off buses.

"The Lord Mayor needs to do more than tinker around with early services for nine existing Buz routes"

New services include:

Route 100 Forest Lake/Inala – 4.55am

Route 120 Tarragindi – 5.24am

Route 130 Parkinson/Algester 4.45am

Route 140 Browns Plains/Calamvale – 5.05am and 5.35am

Route 150 Browns Plains/Runcorn – 4.45am

Route 330 Bracken Ridge – 5.10am

Route 340 Carseldine – 5.17am

Route 345 Aspley – 5.05am

Route 444 Moggill – 5.10am and 5.25am

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk's 'Early Bird' bus upgrade welcomed

Greetings,

RAIL Back on Track welcomes Lord Mayor Graham Quirk's announcement that early bird buses will be introduced to the BUZ network from next month. Nine BUZ routes will be upgraded. Our members have serious criticisms of Brisbane City Council's stewardship of the bus network, however, to give credit where it is due, we think this will be an excellent initiative.

In the lead up to the Brisbane City Council Elections in early 2016, all political parties and candidates are on notice: any candidate that ignores upgrades to Brisbane's bus network will be losing a major vote-winning opportunity.

A larger-than-usual allowance has been made for buses in Brisbane City Council's most recent budget. We predict Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will announce a major public transport upgrade, possibly a BulimbaGlider or CentenaryGlider, before the next Brisbane City Council elections?

Bus Reform will give Brisbane Australia's best bus network within 2 years. As Bus Reform rearranges existing bus services, it will be fast, near-cost neutral, and powerfully effective at increasing mobility across the entire City of Brisbane. Our proposal is here http://tiny.cc/newnetwork

We welcome this initiative from the Lord Mayor, and look forward to further announcements from the Lord Mayor and Lord Mayoral challengers as the election approaches.

Best wishes
Robert
