IPART has been asked to review and determine maximum fares for public transport to apply from July 2016.The review affects all users of rail, bus, ferry and light rail services on which the Opal card can be used. This covers most services in Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wollongong, the Blue Mountains and the Hunter regions.

We are seeking comments on the best fare structure for Opal until 28 August 2015 and have released an issues paper.

An online survey is now available so passengers and taxpayers can have their say about the options under consideration in the Issues Paper.

You can also make a submission online, or alternatively via email or post to:
IPART, Transport Team
PO Box K35
Haymarket Post Shop NSW 1240

QuoteShould all 25-kilometre journeys on Sydney's public transport network be created equal?

Travelling that distance between point A to point B during the peak costs $4.50 using buses, $4.82 if travelling by train and $7.70 – that's 60 per cent more – once an Opal user decides to get off the train to travel the last five kilometres by bus.

Good to see the penny has dropped - FINALLY! Get rid of bus sections, I always hated those!

Sydney should have sorted the fares then rolled out the opal on top.

Retro fitting the opal on the fare basket case is not without challenges.  At least they are now giving it a good go.

We all pointed out that they needed full fare mode integration from day one.  Guess they will get there eventually ...

It is great to see some progress being made. I think it was a grace error that they did not fix up fares with Opal. Perhaps it was due to the issues with previous systems and therefore a high degree of caution. I still think it would have been worth it.

Opal is a basket case: no topping up at stations?  :hg

That said, Perth doesn't have top ups at most stations.

Sydney Morning Herald --> Sydney's George Street Light Rail project sparks call for free train travel in CBD
IMHO it depends on the new fare structure. It is a good idea to have the free travel around the CBD if they go for the Translink model or keep the current system. If they have "Daily" tickets then no.

I hope sense prevails and they propose an integrated system. The current one is archaic! Penalising mode changes is absurd!
