Airtrain launches an Australian-first with its new E-ticket App.

Brisbane Airtrain is the first Australian public transport operator to sell tickets using a smart phone app.

Airtrain's new e-ticket capability allows passengers to easily pre-purchase tickets in both directions of travel between Brisbane Airport and Brisbane

City. Passengers can then use their smart phone to display the ticket's bar code to enter and exit Airtrain stations.

"While e-ticketing isn't a new concept, it certainly is for public transport.

Airtrain is, and has always been, committed to innovating and making travel  as convenient as possible for all of our passengers" said Airtrain's CEO Chris Basche.

Airtrain will also offer a 10% discount on all pre-paid online tickets. The Airtrain smart phone app also provides timetable information including a "Next Trains Today" function that allows passengers to check the next train departure from  any station on the Airport and Gold Coast Lines.

I had a look at the airtrain eticket prices and the base prices are the Translink paper ticket prices so for a suburban journey it is not necessarily cheaper even with the 10% discount.

For example when selecting Fairfield to Airport the Eticket price is $22.60 less 10% = $20.34, the gocard fares are $20.64 peak or $19.82 off peak.

Also on a related note I have found that when travelling from the suburbs when onto free travel after 9 trips the fare charged doesn't account for that in that the translink portion is still charged, however if you change at Bowen Hills for example and touch off then back on you get the translink portion free and just pay the airtrain fare.
