Brisbanetimes --> Budget spending on roads tipped to send states off the rails

From article: "A spokesman for Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss said the evidence supported the argument that states would be able to fund public transport projects, saying that Victoria was proceeding with the Melbourne Metro and Queensland with the Cross-River Rail Tunnel."

Something they know about the Qld budget I wonder ?

I think more of a slip re CRR, probably meant BaT ....

I think the State will push asset sales as the way forward for BaT ...

Sydney Morning Herald --> Green opportunity lost in Christine Milne's road rage

Quote... Now I've seen everything. The Greens used to be numerate and they used to be smart about the use of price signals.

They are now neither. They are no longer numerate, because they've fallen for one of the oldest tricks in the book. They are no longer smart, because they are prepared to let petrol excise shrink.

Greens leader Christine Milne says she will block the budget move to index fuel excise in line with inflation. It's been shrinking in effectiveness ever since former prime minister John Howard froze it at 38.1¢ per litre ...

Concur ^.  The Greens were happy to sacrifice rail with the Carbon Tax for political expediency and now this vacillation.  Mob of fuking hypocrites!

At least with Blue and Red you know what they are about even if seriously flawed.

Keep in mind that for 72 of the 76 position, the quota halves because you are voting for 12 positions per state, not 6.  (For the other 4 - the territories get 2 each and they go up for reelection at every election so no difference there.)  You only need half the primary vote to get a foot in the door, which instead of resulting in say 3 LNP, 2 ALP and one cross bench can result in 5 LNP, 3 ALP and 4 cross bench depending on preference flows.

A DD would probably result in more Greens and PUP senators if anything, let alone other minor parties.  Even Nick Xenophon might get one of his group in with him.

Xenophon group got about 1.8 quotas IIRC, the other guy just didn't quite get over the line.

Which translates into potentially 3 senators if the vote was basically the same at a DD.

A DD is the last thing the government wants so it won't happen.
