Darwin will have its public transport network reviewed extensively
Date: 21.03.2014

The Northern Territory Government is exploring a range of options to help improve the public transport network in Darwin.

Minister for Transport Peter Styles says the review aims to improve the public transport network and forms a key component in the development of a Public Transport Strategy for the territory.

"Darwin's public transport network has not been properly reviewed for many years and this is a project that our government believes is a high priority," he says.

"There are more than 5.2 million passenger trips per year on the greater Darwin public transport network and we want to be able to continue to offer them the most efficient, cost effective mode of traveling."

This review is part of the government's plan to provide safe, reliable and comfortable public transport and we want to continue to provide this to our community.

Government representatives, and Darwin, Litchfield and Palmerston Councils and the community will have the opportunity to input to the review in the latter half of the year following preliminary data analysis.

Styles says public transport networks in rapidly developing cities such as Darwin need periodic review to ensure the system fits the city and reflects evolving best practice in efficient and effective network design and city planning.

"It is vital this study looks at all the challenges and issues together to ensure the best design is employed to address them," he says.

The review will be undertaken by transport planning consultancy MRCagney and international transit consultant Jarrett Walker.
