The Honourable Paul Lucas

Veterans travel free on ANZAC Day

Veterans going to and from dawn services and parades this ANZAC Day will receive free travel on South East Queensland public transport.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Paul Lucas today said veterans attending an ANZAC Day event next Wednesday (April 25) would be eligible.

"All veterans using public transport who are wearing either a service uniform or service medals will travel free on TransLink bus, ferry or train services," Mr Lucas said.

"Veterans' spouses will also travel free, as will family members marching in place of a relative, so long as they are wearing their relative's medals," Mr Lucas said.

TransLink is also offering free travel to people in uniform from the Girls Brigade, Boys Brigade, Scouts and military associations who are participating in a ceremony.

Mr Lucas said the State Government was pleased to support veterans and their families in this way on the day.

"This is a small thing we're doing to thank the men and women who've given so much to our country, it means a lot to veterans to be given this acknowledgment."

Mr Lucas said TransLink had also arranged additional public transport services for people travelling to the dawn service and parade in the inner city on the day.

"There will be special bus and train services for people travelling to the 4am ANZAC dawn service in Anzac Square and the ANZAC Parade at 10am," Mr Lucas said.

"Additionally anyone travelling by cab on the day will not have to pay the standard $2 late night/early morning taxi surcharge."

"It normally applies every day between midnight and 5am. But from midnight on until 5am next Wednesday it will be waived to help people to attend dawn services," he said.
