Ease the squeeze for Sunshine Coast commuters

MEDIA RELEASE
Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Sunshine Coast commuters will benefit from double the capacity on a popular afternoon Nambour service from this week.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the 3.30pm Central to Nambour service would be boosted from a three carriage to a six carriage train.

"Earlier this year, I asked Queensland Rail to look at smarter, more cost-effective ways to improve services on the Sunshine Coast line," Ms Simpson said.

"From this week, Sunshine Coast commuters will have a more comfortable experience on their journey home, with twice the seating capacity available on the 3.30pm Nambour service," he said.

"I'm pleased we have been able to deliver a common sense solution to improve the daily commute for people on the Sunshine Coast line."

More than 1000 passengers use Sunshine Coast service during the afternoon peak period.

I can confirm QR schedulers has started the upgrade early.  I've just boarded at Caboolture at 4:23pm this afternoon on IM5109 (IMU109) with IMU121 leading this afternoon's service.

I've observed it eliminated the bumper to bumper standees on the City-Caboolture leg (still a few doorway standees) and it eliminated the doorway standees north of Caboolture (this particular service carries 200+ passengers north of Caboolture each weekday - upgrading to a 6-car 400+ seater provides everyone with a seat north of Canoolture).

Another 3 car unit taken away from potential use in sector 2 timetables?

Per the government release, I was assuming it was meant to address overcrowding issues on the Roma Street - Caboolture  leg more than removing standees north of Caboolture.

The other alternative I can only see was to keep the 3:30pm service 3-car is to break sectorisation and run it express Bowen Hills-Caboolture on the Gympie North express pattern via the Surburbans (pushing Albion to Nundah boardings/alightings onto another service).
