The city's transport future blueprint is ready for action.

Mayor Tom Tate launched the 2031 Transport Strategy at a delegates' dinner at the Asia Pacific Cycle Congress last night.

The Transport Strategy will guide the city's transport system to 2031, creating a smart, connected and liveable city under a one-network approach.

Cr Tate described the strategy as a city-changing initiative that would create a world-class transport system and put the Gold Coast on the map.

"A balanced transport system is the key to a positive transport future. We aim to manage road space better, eliminate bottle necks, invest in cycling and walking, extend the light rail network, improve bus services and extend the capacity of the heavy railway," he said.

"Following a very successful six-week consultation period last year, we received 950 written pieces of feedback and 1200 face-to-face contacts. The number one community issue emerging from the feedback was public transport and we have incorporated this into the strategy.

"For example, we have requested additional bus services in the growing northern suburbs and these services will now be offered by Translink."

Cr Tate said Council was now getting on with the job of implementing the actions contained within the transport strategy.

"To date, we have:

    commenced work on developing a joint traffic management centre
    undertaken a trial for free weekend parking
    gone to market on a car sharing scheme for the city; and
    removed inefficient transit lanes."

Initiatives to commence this year as a result of the strategy include:

    trial of 'turn left on red' (commences 8 April)
    expansion of the Active School Travel program
    development of a cycle and pedestrian plan
    development of a public transport network plan
    investigation of the extension of rapid transit to heavy rail and infill train stations.

Cr Tate said the Gold Coast transport vision was for a city that:

    enjoys smart growth – with the majority of development based on compact, mixed used centres focused on high-quality public transport
    is connected – by an integrated, safe and efficient transport network
    makes sustainable travel choices – a significant proportion of Gold Coast residents and visitors choose to walk, cycle and take public transport as part of their daily travel.

Hope Island and Parkwood are the only ones I'd do IMO.

I've no issue with them all being done as long as they are cheap, and as long as there is an express pattern which dodges most of them.

My preferred express to Brisbane pattern is (assuming it finishes at Elanora):

- Elanora (LRT connection)
- Robina (LRT connection)
- Nerang
- Parkwood (likely to be the biggest PnR on the system and LRT connection)
- Helensvale
- Coomera
- Beenleigh

Rest would be an all stations Elanora to Beenleigh pattern.

Rest would be change at the nearest express stop

Coomera is better positioned for parking and there's actually stuff at Helensvale.  (There's actually going to be a Helensvale to Hope Island/Santa Barbara feeder bus now.

But getting back to Helensvale from Hope island involves passing under the rail line and following the winding discovery drive.

Hope island drive would service Paradise Point, Sanctuary Cove etc more directly.

No different to:
- Most of Ashmore and Benowa
- The Elanora local services
- The GC Hwy between Mermaid Beach and Christine Avenue

I'm not sure how a Helensvale to Paradise Point service would work in practice withotu duplicating other routes.

I would also ask whether there's demand for a Helensvale to Paradise Point direct service. You can get there by swapping buses at Harbour Town, right? That section of Brisbane Road/GC Hwy isn't exactly hard up for buses to get to Helensvale – interchanging there wouldn't be too bad in my opinion.

If anything it will be easier now because they want to join the Paradise Point area to the Pine Ridge Rd service (ie calling at Harbour Town), and another one is proposed to double back from Hollywell Rd (which I don't particularly agree with).
