Work will begin on Sunday on a project to remove at least eight bus stops from Sydney's inner west – an early stage of a government agenda to cut the number of stops across the city.

Transport for NSW has a long-term aim to speed up buses through Sydney by scheduling services that stop at fewer locations.

But changing bus stops is always fraught, and the agenda outlined in a document called ''Sydney's Bus Future'' late last year is being implemented only gradually.

In the inner west, Transport for NSW is proposing to remove eight bus stops and relocate another 11 around Broadway, Newtown, Enmore and Tempe.

It is likely that similar programs will eventually be introduced on other congested bus corridors – such as the eastern suburbs, lower north shore and around Victoria Road.

But, for now, the department says it wants to focus on the inner west changes.

As a rough rule of thumb, Transport for NSW says bus stops on local services should sit about 400 metres apart ...
