Two stops with the same number 83m apart

I'm not a bus person. Before March this year I'd travelled on a Brisbane bus once (other than the free Spring Hill loop).  Then our office moved to Woolloongabba and I was forced to start catching buses.

Anyway - that aside, I thought I'd be smart last Thursday. I had to drop my car off at Aspley to get serviced, so I decided to catch the 340 all the way to Woolloongabba.  I checked where the bus stops... "Stop 43" at Aspley.  It looked easy.

Walking down Gympie Road, I walked past "Stop 44/45" and arrived at "Stop 43" where I waited.  About a minute later along came a 340 bus (that looked like 390 because of the stupid way they display "4" on those particular buses).  I put my hand out only to watch the bus go flying past and stop what looked about 100m down the road.

After getting my morning exercise, I arrived at where the bus stopped only to see ANOTHER bus stop signed "Stop 43".

How confusing is it to have two stops with the same name (going in the same direction)? Google Maps says they're 83m apart - http://goo.gl/maps/LQLhU.

Not being a bus person - I was wondering.... is this common thing??

That's just unacceptable.  FWIW, one is stop 10066, the other is 10067.

It's also not common.  Only example I can think of is O/B Logan Rd stop 7 at W'Gabba which has two adjacent stops, one for Logan Rd services and the other for Ipswlch Rd services.  And I think that's a poor performance.

Hmm... one is "Gympie Rd at Aspley Shops, Stop 43".  The other is "Gympie Rd at Aspley, Stop 43."   :dntk

Did they seriously think that people wouldn't get them mixed up?   :yikes:

the powers that be plonked a random stop on the cnr of Keperra st/Samford rds whilst about 50 metres back on Glenmorgan st (stop 003818) there is a registered route 362 stop.If you wave down the 362 driver at this random stop they will always stop but have to key it in manually to get the ticket machines going.  :bna:

in the past at qe2 hospital there was also 2 identical timetables for the 262,260 displayed at both qe2 stops (same direction) Pity the bus only stops at one lol
Had to call mt Gravatt buses a couple of times before they finally fixed it.

Opposite the KFC/just north of the intersection heading towards the city? If so the shops stop is for the 340 or any other route like the 346, 341 etc. The first one is only for the 680 and the 336 which turns right on to Robinson/Albany Creek Road. Pretty sure I've pointed this out before. I think that came as a result of the old wood fired pizza store (where the current shops stop is located) burning down and damaging the walkway roofing so the stop was temporary relocated outside the old Matilda or Mobil or something servo that was there - before it became the United Servo. When the roofing for the walkway and structural repairs were done they reinstated the stop outside the shops but kept the 680 using it (used to be a pole with the yellow sign). After the interchange was moved they chucked it onto the 336 route and upgraded the stop. This was well before translink came to power.

The next stop to the north is labelled 44/45.  Why not just relabel it 45 and change the northern 43 to 44?

No - that would be logical!   :frs:

Sandgate Road has duplicated bus stops between Hamilton Road and Virgina Railway Station but they don't have the traditional markings ie 310 stops have arches while the unused stops still have the old post and BT stop sign. There might be a number on them in small writing. Something like 6, 7 or 8. For the record no buses stop there. Their just stops that were in the pre translink era that still have the signs and posts there. Webster road still has the old wooden black and yellow bus posts and seats  :hg

Couldn't they at least put a letter after the number?

Stop 43A
Stop 43B

Have a look at the stop numbering on the 212. This does confuse people who are only looking for the stop number, as there are a few duplicated numbers in very different locations.

I've never understood the stupid obsession with numbering everything.  Sure, have a unique number, but what's with the non-unique one?

I'd hazard a guess and say the non unique stop number is a hangover from a previous asset managment setup, probably a local council one. I'd presume that each street had it's own set of stop numbers, so there may be multiple "Stop 38"s but there should only be one Stop 38 on Stanley Rd.

Such a setup has it's pluses (it's easier to remember Stop 38 on Stanley Rd, rather than Stop number 002534), but also it's pitfalls when two stops with the same short non-unique number are near each other.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Talk to BT.

They're BT-owned stops and the stop names and numbers are set by them (apparently it makes sense internally).

We all know if you bought it up with them, they'd be sure to direct you swiftly to TransLink.

Well yes that is who you would contact, however the response would come from BCC.

I meant no disrespect, just seemingly no time of day from TL for things like that.  I have enough trouble from the call centre just giving feedback about early/late running.

Makes it much easier to navigate, but only if it's done right.  It is in Adelaide, but not here.

Same thing. It's a flow on effect.

It's dependent on the time and willingness of BT to provide a response.

I've just been watching the responses since my last post. To find the answer to the odd numbering on the 212, and indeed many other routes, we must go back in time to say 1989. Todays 212 makes no sense with the stop numbering. Back in 1989, the route was 8A. The 8A began at stop 42 (located on Walker Ave) and then turned right onto Agnew St , right to Kensington (41/40) and traveled the reverse direction of the current 212 towards the city. When the 8A reached Ferguson Rd, it turned right to Wiles st, right to Perth st and joined the 8B, 8C routes to the City via Main St (Story Bridge). 8C is todays 210 route. Follow this route from Walker Ave terminus to the Gabba and you will see the numbering is in correct order.
When we had the major changes and renumbering of the bus routes, the stop numbers were totally overlooked and never changed to reflect the new routes.

I hope this helps explain the odd numbering on many routes.

One more reason why there needs to be one agency responsible for everything.
