Fog - 20th June 2008

Some photographs taken walking from Roma St Station to QUT this morning.

Rail because of its signal and safe working systems is not affected by fog in the same way as other transport modes.

I came in on the 6.44am from Oxley, no worries at all (apart from very full loading of course  )

A car accident at Geebung  has caused some short delays on Caboolture line, but otherwise network fine.

ONE-third of Queensland is covered by heavy fog this morning, delaying flights and choking traffic. June is on its way to becoming the foggiest month on record.

Airport arrivals are delayed an hour because visibility is down to 50m and a number of planes are in a holding pattern.

A spokesman said low visibility operations were in place because the tower was in fog, while the runway itself was relatively clear.

?Everyone making an approach is getting in,?? he said.

There were no delays in departures.

The spokesman said conditions had been worsening over the past hour.

CityCat ferries and Caboolture line train services are being delayed for 10 minutes.

Bureau of Meterology senior forecaster Vikash Prasad said the fog extended from Townsville to the Gold Coast and west to Charleville.

Mr Prasad said it was "unusual" for it to cover such a large area, but June was typically the foggiest month of the year in south-east Queensland.

"We've already had three events (of fog), the record is four days of foggy weather," he said.

Mr Prasad said the fog was caused by moisture in the air following the few days of rain, but was unlikely to continue into next week with drier, cooler conditions expected.

Motorists are being warned to drive to conditions and to use their lights, with usual congestion expected to worsen due to low visibility.

There have been several accidents across Brisbane: a six-vehicle accident on Beaudesert Road, Calamvale, and a two-vehicle accident on the Centenary Highway.

Earlier, buses had to transfer commuters to and from Caboolture after train services were cancelled due to a malfunctioning boomgate.

Fog, accidents disrupt commute

Thick fog and traffic accidents - including a crash that has cut rail services on the Caboolture line - are causing major delays for Brisbane commuters this morning.

A car ran into a level crossing next to Geebung Station on the corner of Newman and Robinson roads about 6.20am today, blocking the line while emergency services crews cleared the scene.

The driver was not injured, but the accident has caused significant delays to services. They are not expected to be back on time until about 8am.

Meanwhile, thick fog has slowed traffic on all major roads. City Cat services are experiencing 10-minute delays, while flights from Brisbane's domestic airport have also been delayed.

Traffic is slowing because of debris in the left lane of the Mt Lindesay Highway before the Johnson Rd overpass at Browns Plains, while a traffic accident on Old Cleveland Road is blocking one lane in either direction at the intersection of Leicester Street.
