Northgate to Shorncliffe track work

From first train Saturday 31 July until last train Sunday 1 August, all trains between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations will be replaced by buses.

Buses will stop all stations between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations, with connecting train services to Brisbane City.

This closure will allow maintenance work to take place on the North Boondall and Sandgate footbridges and overhead power lines.

Why is trackwork starting at 11pm on a Friday or Saturday night?  This is actually a quite busy time on the network, with some people going out for a night on the town, and others going home a bit earlier to avoid relying on Nightlink.

CityRail generally start their weekend trackwork at 2am Saturday morning for this reason.

Perhaps its because if they don't start it then, they won't be able to get it finished in time?

Yeerongpilly to Kuraby track work

On Sunday 25 July, all trains between Yeerongpilly and Kuraby stations will be replaced by buses.

Buses will stop all stations between Yeerongpilly and Kuraby stations. Connecting train services to Brisbane City will depart from Yeerongpilly station. Connecting train services to Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes will depart Kuraby station. Buses will run directly from Trinder Park station to Brisbane Airport.

This closure will allow for bridge works between Salisbury and Coopers Plains, resurfacing and resealing the Boundary Road level crossing at Coopers Plains, and overhead line maintenance.

Interesting, so trains are running too and from Kuraby, but to get to the airport passengers are supposed to get off at Trinder Park. Better bus interchange or closer to the main road?

Probably easier to get on to the Gateway Motorway from there.  Interesting that the trackwork service is superior to the full time service for these people.

Well didn't I have a fun time yesterday trying to get to the city. First on Friday I rang TL to make sure the buses are free as they have always been & was told no but in actual fact they were & was told this by QR staff at Northgate on Saturday morning & when I got home Saturday afternoon I rang QR & the person there also said the buses are, always have been & always will be free. Then on Saturday morning I assumed the inbound rail/buses would be leaving from the inbound bus stop at Zillmere. An hr went past none arrived so I called TL & they had no idea where they were stopping but like me they assumed they would be leaving from the inbound stop & there were other people there also waiting for the rail/bus. One of them even told me he spoke to the station officer at Zillmere & was told that is where they are stopping. Eventually he went back to the station to make sure & was told that is definately were they are stopping. After about an hr a rail/bus turned up but was told the inbound buses would be stopping at the outbound bus stop. Fortunately she let us on. When we got to Northgate I spoke to one of the rail staff & told them what happened so I assume they rectified that problem. There were no signs at the inbound stop saying inbound buses were stopping at the outbound stop however there were signs at the station & that stop so maybe I should have read them a bit better but when there have been track closures before, inbound rail/buses stopped at the inbound bus stop so I assumed it would be the same as before. I have made a complaint to TL & someone from QR will get back to in 10 days, yeah we will see. I have also noticed as of midday sunday the rail/buses are now stopping at the inbound stop, what the hell is going on.

The buses should be free. It is a lower level of service, transfer penalty etc.
Geez. They want the customer to bend over backwards and then pay for the inconvenience too.

Free muffin handouts would be good too. 

Every station should have a bus bay and replacement bus stop that has a bus number etc etc like Perth and in Melbourne IIRC.

Yes, this is an interesting situation Astro.  TransLink seem to think that punters are to have ticketing (paper or go) even on the bus substitutions.  The reality is no one has of course, and there seems to be a general understanding that you don't need one.  I have actually requested a clear statement on what the ticketing policy is during these bus substitutions  and have never received a reply. 

There has been some discussion on support during track closures.  Seems still not sorted as it should.

The bus I caught going in had the machine covered up & the bus coming home didn't have a machine at all. No TL just want to get as much money out of us as possible. I seriously think it's time I bought a car.

This notice states that buses will be all stations Petrie <--> Northgate

I would hope that they do what they normally do during Ippy closures.  For pax transiting direct they have buses going between Petri and Northgate express. Then other all stopper buses for the intermediate stations. No brainer really, called customer service ...

I noted an extra service through Central late this morning, assume that was an extra in from Northgate.  They do run extras in from Corinda when closures as well, particularly when the frequency is one hour normally.  It is bad enough with the buses and this compounded by poor frequency of course.

Obviously some kind of review of these procedures is needed.
I would go so far as to say a BUZ or NightLink like service should operate during these shutdown times.
Buses every 15 minutes, defined route, hop on, hop off.

And if they don't have go card readers installed, then they should be free.

Why do they keep using BBL for this work? Why not BT buses which sit in the depot?
BT buses have nice display screen, go card readers, comfy, LOW FLOOR.

And they should issue post-it notes and pens to the marshals/drivers to write down things
and hand it to the customer.

I have often helped pax at railway stations myself during closures, and have regularly found pax on stations waiting for trains not coming.  

There is a mindset that thinks if signs are there all will be well.  Doesn't always work because folks may not be able to read (language or cognitive or other issues), or they just don't see them, and sometimes removed by ferals.  I have suggested that a team of 'helping hands' be trained up to be deployed during closures under the new maintenance regime.  These 'helping hands' would be additional to present staff - QR, security and TL, but every station on the line during the closure would be attended by staff. These staff can then direct to bus departure/arrival points etc, help and guide as needed. Plus they would be in contact with bus control and could alert to other issues e.g. unexpected pax loads etc., wheel chair pax and so forth.

They always use KBL & Thompsons on this line although on the odd occasion they will use BBL awell & council buses are usless as you need to have luggage bins for bikes, peoples shopping & the like which is why they always use coaches. These coaches also seat 50-60 people unlike the council buses but they do have low floor buses on stanby if needed as I saw at Northgate.

Really? The ones in Brisbane are usually BBL relics from ancient history, who knows where these buses came from.
The BCC buses seat 65 (standard) and 80 (arctic). They should put low floor ones on. And when they do these shut downs, could they consider 15 minute buses???

According to my old school bus driver (who I had during one of these times) BBL uses what ever they have available during these times so pre-exisiting services have first choice (eg: school runs) which is why you commonly see the older buses, they also try to use the larger buses were possible (artics) so it all comes down to what is available and what their obligations are to other customers. This includes not sending certain buses out if they know that they will need them at a certain time and wouldn't have them empty/available at that time (eg: a school route that starts in X hours or such).

Went to work yesterday & the signs where still up so I read them & guess what people, the signs actually said the inbound rail/buses would be stopping at the inbound bus stop. Obviously the bus companies didn't tell QR where they were stopping.

Ok, so Translink website says the FG line from Bowen Hills to FG will be closed this weekend, which agrees with the signs they've had a Central and the notices put in the paper. However, the track closure notice put up at FG says the Ferny Grove line will be closed on Wednesday night from 10.45pm until the last service and that buses will substitute. As yet, no notice of this on the TL website however.The sign doesn't say what for. It strikes me as a little odd to have two closures so close together.

The guard did make an announcement about a track closure during the trip, but I wasn't paying too much attention as I already knew about the one this weekend.

Bowen Hills to Ferny Grove track closure

From 10.30pm until the last service on Wednesday 16 March, all trains between Bowen Hills and Ferny Grove will be replaced by buses in both directions.

Passengers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

I wonder what it was? It must be serious if it couldn't wait until Friday. Could be just before FG station. There is a slow board at the platform, and trains run slowly through the Arbor St level crossing. I had assumed it was just something to do with the construction works, but perhaps not? I haven't noticed any other slow spots on the line. I suppose we'll find out tomorrow if the slow spot is gone.

Arbor Street rail crossing closure at Ferny Grove

From 8pm Friday 18 March until 5am Monday 21 March, the rail crossing at Arbor Street (between Samford Road and Conavalla Street), Ferny Grove will be closed for maintenance works.

The following diversions will be in place for bus routes 397 (Ferny Grove to Mitchelton) and 398 (Ferny Grove to Mitchelton). 

Inbound services
Inbound services will turn right into Arbor Street, left into Tramway Street, left into Samford Road and then continue along normal route.

Outbound services
Outbound services will travel along normal route to Samford Road, then straight ahead at Samford Road, right into Tramway Street, right into Arbor Street and left into Convalla Street.

These services will terminate as normal at Ferny Grove train station.

From the first service on Saturday 14 May until the last service on Sunday 15 May, all trains between Dutton Park (on the Beenleigh line) and Cleveland stations will be replaced by buses in both directions.

Delays of up to one hour may be experienced.

Queensland Rail recommends customers with a disability contact a member of the Queensland Rail Customer Service Team on hand, or call 3606 5555 or text 0428 774 636 if assistance is required.  Alternative transport options may be provided if required.

• engineering inspections from  Buranda to Cleveland train stations

• re-sleepering from Lytton Junction to Cleveland train stations
• platform resurfacing works at Cleveland, Lota, Norman Park and Wellington Point train stations
• replacement of lighting at Ormiston train station

Looks ready for some works to get done. The diamond crossing has been assembled and looks ready to be slotted in. Also appears to be some prep works just past Samford Rd (towards the city) for the second track. No word on a possible closure of the Samford Rd crossing to put the extra track in there though, the culverts just to the Ferny Grove side of Samford Rd look like they've nearly finished extending them to put the track ontop.

I can see why they've done it, though find it odd. What about passengers trying to get to other stations on the rail line? Or for Altandi/Fruitgrove what if they're trying to get to the GC?

Varsity Lakes is perfectly understandable, because there is enough latent capacity in the Surfside routes which operate between Varsity Lakes and Robina anyway.

The reasoning must be that Altandi and Fruitgrove are adjacent to BUZ services and that is enough.  (Runcorn for instance appears to be included and it is difficult to see why Fruitgrove would be bypassed - I presume they would just be running straight past it on Beenleigh Road non-stop.)

What a massive inconvenience to a major corridor ....  

This failure to provide alternative rail replacement bus services to these locations has a distinct Translink beancounter stench to it.
Seems to bear out the rumor that Translink is now taking over the operation of the rail replacement bus services from QR Passenger Rail, no doubt the end result will be a lesser standard of an already low standard of service as Translink attempts to justify its existence to the Government by saving money that will then be wasted on salries for such as Mr Strachan while reducing services to commuters who pay excessive fares for sub standard services.

That is rather confusing, it says " all trains between Dutton Park and Varsity Lakes will be replaced by buses in both directions". Too bad if you lived at Varsity Lakes and didn't realise that the bus bit doesn't apply to you
