Refreshed Cabinet to deliver for Queenslanders

18th May 2023

Premier and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

A new Cabinet for the Palaszczuk Government has been revealed today
The revitalised Cabinet will have an unrelenting focus on the national issues of healthcare and housing
The Premier has today unveiled a refreshed Cabinet focussed on delivering for Queenslanders – now and for the future.

The refreshed Cabinet will continue to drive Queensland's substantial and modernising economic agenda for the future, while also tackling the issues affecting Queensland households today.

In the new Palaszczuk Cabinet, Shannon Fentiman will take responsibility for Health and Ambulance Services, Mental Health and Women.

Minister Meaghan Scanlon has been promoted, taking on responsibility for the new standalone priority portfolio of Housing.

Minister Leeanne Enoch will have responsibility for Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities and the Arts.

Minister Di Farmer will assume responsibility for Youth Justice.

Quotes attributable to the Premier:

"Our government cares about Queenslanders and what they're thinking - I have listened, and I have acted," the Premier said.

"I'm going to use the experience I have as Premier to have a critical focus on shaping a better and fairer Queensland, now and for the future.

"I'm firmly focussed on the future. And I'm firmly focussed on the key issues affecting Queenslanders – as my government is.

"That's why I have refreshed the government by refreshing the Cabinet and today marks a new beginning."

Interesting that Mark Bailey has added digital services to his portfolio.

Is the QLD going to convert TMR branches into "Service QLD" hubs like NSW and Victoria?

It is a natural fit for 'mangocube', given his propensity to tweet a lot.

Multiple ministries for multiple people.
What could possibly go wrong?
Same faces, same results to come but worse as no one will be on top of their portfolio, bar relative newbie Meaghan Scanlon.
They will stagger under the weight of multiple portfolios, so lots more bigger and grander failures to come.

Bailey gets the new gig of "Digital Services" [the 21stC version of "them there flying machines"] added to his existing Transport/Main Roads Portfolio....

Madam Premier clearly sees digital/transport ie., ever more ROADS as clearly just an afterthought collective of...you know....stuff!    :fp:

Can you feel the.....World Class!!!    :woz:

SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:

The ironic thing is that under his watch the roll out of digital licences is way behind schedule.

I also find that digital services are not up to speed unlike in other states.

They should model all their digital services under one banner like Services NSW.

Plus, we don't even have the updated Translink app to view our travel history when paying with smart ticketing. How many times has this been pushed back!!!

"I have listened and I have acted" is polliespeak for "There should be no more debate about this -- everyone should get on with their lives"

Premier is listening with her tin ear. And she might benefit from booking and appointment with Specsavers.

If Palaszczuk is still Premier at this time next year, then she'll have been in the job as long as Beattie.

Couriermail --> Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk reveals motivation behind cabinet reshuffle $

QuoteThe wellbeing of government frontbenchers was a key factor in the rare reshuffle of the cabinet Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has revealed, as she declared her ministers were "only human".

And Ms Palaszczuk, in an exclusive interview in the immediate aftermath of the shake-up, said it would take a "very serious issue" for someone to be removed from cabinet and there were no new faces at the table because there was "no vacancy".

She also stood by her disdain for a leadership succession plan but affirmed there were a "handful of people" on the team who could become Premier one day, and she was "equipping" talented people for the future of the government and Labor.

When that might be is unknown, with Ms Palaszczuk reaffirming she remained "absolutely energised and absolutely committed" as the Premier that would lead Labor to the next election.

A reshuffle of the cabinet this week has been sold as a "new beginning" for the nearly decade old Labor government, with Ms Palaszczuk conceding she had "heard the message loud and clear" that the team "needs to do better". ...

"The new ministry is absolutely focused on those three key issues, housing, and health and crime."

Need to be focussed a bit more on public and active transport as well.

Policy stalemate! Repetitive 'plans' and 're-studies' is not getting the job done.

Brisbanetimes --> Money far from silent in Premier's blatant fundraising U-turn

QuoteFor a move further obscuring political influence in Queensland, the premier's U-turn to again offer even the appearance of access to her ministers for those willing to pay is oddly transparent.

Since Annastacia Palaszczuk made what she painted as a principled decision to ban herself and her frontbench from so-called cash-for-access fundraisers last July, the LNP has outpaced Labor on donations by a factor of four. ...

Quote... The Queensland government should be hiring more real doctors instead of spin doctors.

Following the latest pitch – aka Tuesday's budget – to appease a cheesed-off public, we learnt there were 123 more government staff working in marketing, media and communication roles than there were last year.

In Empress Anna's own department, the number of "Yes Minister" nodders has jumped by 42 more full-time employees than accounted for in the 2022-23 budget.

Oh, and there are 73 more set to board the bus in the next financial year. ...

Sickening stuff, public transport poor areas cannot even get basic bus services.

Couriermail --> MPs call on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to remove Curtis Pitt from role of Speaker $

QuoteQueensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has confirmed Speaker Curtis Pitt is battling "a number of issues" but says there are no discussions to replace him, as senior MPs demand she remove him from the role.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has thrown her support behind Speaker Curtis Pitt, amid calls from several senior MPs that he must be removed from his high-profile role immediately.

While MPs are banned under parliamentary rules from speaking publicly against the revered position of Speaker several have privately raised their alarm with the Courier-Mail, saying the controversies are "a blight on the institution".

Mr Pitt has been on leave since last Wednesday afternoon after slurring his words throughout the morning parliamentary sitting – something he later claimed was due to taking medication for severe back pain. He has denied being intoxicated.

Several senior MPs have told The Courier-Mail they were horrified the Premier had not intervened to remove him. ...

Again, I don't think we should be particularly surprised one way or another how this next State election goes. Palaszczuk's been in the job quite a while, has federal drag to deal with now, and will have to navigate pressure on both flanks.

On the flip side, Qld Labor is very, very good at winning elections. It's also not super clear what points the state LNP are going to pick to run with and how those will go in the battleground seats vs playing to the base.

achiruel

I really think the Premier should have retired last year and handed over the reigns to someone new. The price of her not doing so could cost Labor majority government, if not government altogether. I also don't have a lot of faith in one-off polls, and would be very surprised if the LNP won majority at the next election.

Agreed. She's had plenty of time to pursue her own policies: so much so that she now has little direction. The only reason there's a chance is that the LNP has little to no direction either.

I'm not sure who would actually be better in the government ranks.  Their major advantage has always been that they are not the LNP and that is not personality dependent.

I wouldn't write her off yet.  Nobody wins 3 elections on the trot and increases their majority each time without having some idea of what they are on about, whether or not they are performing as well in the role as some of us might like.

Couriermail --> Des Houghton: Palaszczuk government is in death spiral $

QuoteIt must be now painfully obvious to nearly everybody in the Labor Party that the end is near for the Palaszczuk government, writes Des Houghton.

It must be painfully obvious to nearly everybody in the Labor Party that the Palaszczuk government is in a death spiral.

The betrayals, the blunders and the backflips leave little hope of recovery. Annastacia Palaszczuk herself can probably sense the end game has begun.

She is no longer the preferred premier. She has lost her gloss and is now sniping at the media when questioned about bad polls or policy failures. She did not do her homework before suggesting LNP links to Freshwater Strategies, the firm that found her leadership and her party to be in decline.

Dr Mike Turner, the Freshwater director who conducted the poll, is a Briton who has run polls for Labor, the Lib-Dems and the Tories in the UK and has degrees from the University of Oxford and universities in Vienna, Plymouth and Essex. ...

A full on rant by Des, but he does have a correct point or two on this.

Couriermail --> Mark Bailey presides over $4.5b in mega project cost blowouts $

QuoteTransport Minister Mark Bailey has presided over a whopping $4.5bn in cost blowouts on major projects in just the past three years – more than the state government plans to spend in total on Olympics infrastructure.

The astonishing figure – half of which is the blowout of the train manufacturing program he has admitted to deliberately hiding from Queenslanders – is also more than the annual budget of the Queensland Police Service, and more than double what the government spends on child safety.

The figure can be revealed after an under-fire Minister defiantly refused to resign on Wednesday – despite growing calls for his scalp after his disastrous revelation a $2.4bn blowout on the government's Queensland Train Manufacturing Program had been deliberately deleted from a press release by his office. ...
