Roma Street taking shape as Cross River Rail embarks on new phase
12th February 2022

Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

Despite not being visible to pedestrians passing just outside, a giant 20-metre-deep cavern has now been excavated deep underground at Cross River Rail's Roma Street worksite, marking the next exciting phase of construction on the transformational rail project.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the station box would house the future Cross River Rail Roma Street station entrance, which will rise 27 metres above the new underground rail level once completed.

"In 2021, we capped off Cross River Rail's year of tunnelling when two massive Tunnel Boring Machines completed the project's twin tunnels beneath the Brisbane River and CBD," Mr Bailey said.

"2022 will be our year for station build and tunnel fit out, as Cross River Rail's four underground stations, as well as multiple new above ground stations including a new station at Exhibition, really start to take shape.

"And nowhere is that more evident than at Roma Street, where you not only get an epic sense of the main station but also the network of tunnels that will connect above ground rail, bus and coach services with the new high-capacity underground rail line.

"This mega-project is a strong example of the Palaszczuk Government's commitment to delivering quality transport infrastructure for the people of Queensland, with $5.4 billion invested by our government to get this project done right."

Mr Bailey said the impact of the new station on how people will travel to, from and within Brisbane in the future was a genuine game changer

"Over 45,000 people are expected to use the new station every week-day and the new Roma Street station will not only become our state's single most significant transport interchange, it will also be an integral part of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games."

Mr Bailey pointed also to the crucial role that construction of Cross River rail is playing in supporting our economy in the meantime, with more than 200 people currently working on the Cross River Rail's Roma Street site and over 2,000 working on the project in total

"Cross River Rail is injecting more than $4 million a day into the economy and providing both job and training opportunities at a time when they're needed most," he said.

"Crews have done a terrific job keeping the project on schedule throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with on-site contractors continuing to implement a wide variety of social distancing and other protective measures to main safe operations across the project's multiple construction sites."

"Work will now continue in the station box to install drainage and commence permanent structural works, including formwork, reinforcing and concrete pours."

Roma Street station fast facts:

The 20-metre-deep Roma Street station box is fully excavated, with 38,382 cubic metres of spoil removed.

The station box will house the main station, which will rise 27 metres above the new underground rail line level, and the lift and escalators that will transport people to platform level 27 metres below ground.

The rest of the station is also taking shape, including the 280-metre long station cavern up to 33 metres below ground, the 29-metre deep services shaft, and the connecting tunnels and adits.

More than 200 people are working on the Roma Street site, while more than 20 people have completed an apprenticeship or traineeship on site to date.

The new Roma Street station platforms will be about 220-metres long and set up to 27 metres below the ground.

More than 46,000 people are expected to use the new Roma Street station each weekday by 2036.

Interesting. I wonder what this will mean for the approved shopping centre that Stockland were/are building on the Eastern side of the Gaol, and also for any major upgrade works for Park Road station.

Thia whole precent also needs one name.

Good news! The PDA shows a "potential elevated pedestrian connection" across Park Road station, just like @Gazza proposed!

Doesn't look like it will be there when the station opens though. Likely an addition later down the line.

SurfRail

^ I half expect that means something more akin to the overpass at Springfield station (ie no access to the platforms).

Another plan that is restricted to property boundaries.  This is a pretty poor plan in that it doesn't really change anything!  So Ho hum. Where is the opportunity to build over rail line? Densify around the station? Three stations shown separately and no attempt to show as a station! All
Motherhood statements too!!!

^ I half expect that means something more akin to the overpass at Springfield station (ie no access to the platforms).

This one is an interesting comparison. As a side note, the Springfield bridge predates the railway station, but it was designed to accommodate a future link down to the proposed platforms.

However, the road and rail alignments were switched afterwards, leading to the current configuration.

SurfRail

^ Indeed.

If you were going to have direct access to the platforms, 2-4 likely wouldn't be an issue, but 1 might be depending on where the bridge lands.
Ride the G:

Gazza

But platform 1 doesn't matter as much because you can get at it from the ground anyway.
So no matter where the bridge lands you can have a covered pathway and a go card reader at the outbound end

SurfRail

Agreed - just need to find a way to minimise the walking distance to get on/off P1.  Preferably it wouldn't involve the bridge dumping you into Burke Street and having to use that dingy walkway to get to the existing P1 entrance.

Coincidentally, Redfern has a similar issue with their walkway overpass. This is getting corrected though with the current station upgrade.

I hope that Boggo Road and Park Road pedestrian  connections to the platforms don't become a disaster like Redfern Station prior to the refurbishment.

Fairfield station accessibility rebuild update

Due to recent weather events, the reopening of Yeronga station and the closing of Fairfield station will now occur on Monday 28 March.

Unfortunately, the severe weather over the last two weeks has stopped crews at Yeronga from finishing necessary works to reopen the station. It has also created extra clean-up work for crews and impacts on the wider network have meant that some track works have had to be rescheduled. To minimise the impact on local passengers, Fairfield station will close when Yeronga has reopened. We thank customers and the wider community for their patience.

Fairfield station customers can start looking forward to a new station in the future but right now, to ensure works can be undertaken safely and more efficiently, Fairfield station will be closing from 28 March until late-2022. The station is being rebuilt to increase accessibility and create a better transport experience for all customers.

What is happening with the concept design for Moorooka?

I wonder if it is time to ask CRR to share more detail design of the major City Stations. The ones published on the web sites (CRR and Stated Development) are very schematic/sections and don't show how the station will actually operate. They must know by now.

If only they put that much thought into the northern portal, instead of the half baked layout they went with.

ozbob

Smartest thing they did was bring Queensland Rail back into the fold.   :ok:

The dumbest thing they did (polyticks) was cutting the tunnel back from Yeerongpilly.

At least they have dropped the lie that it will improve service delivery for the Sunshine Coast.

At 3:07 in this video it shows a render of Dutton park station including a train with 3 doors per carriage.
I'm clutching at straws and hoping it's an unexpected indication of what the rolling stock expansion program might produce.

QuoteWho knew that infrastructure ➕ plus drones ➕ plus underground construction equals the kind of footage that you could watch all day. Look at this exciting footage from the last twelve months 👏😍

So what is the train service pattern?  :conf:  >:D
