The Ferny Grove Line is not running on its normal scheduled clock face times this weekend. No mention of that unless you check the journey planner.

Noticed that with the trains meeting at Newmarket like the previous timetable had it. I also noticed that the 2-hourly 397 and 398 were scheduled to leave Ferny Grove sometimes 2 mins before an outbound train would arrive. Could they literally give less of a sh!t about commuters?

They clearly don't give a sh%t. Regular passengers would assume normal clock face times.

Should the R591 be extended to Corinda? I think it would reduce the inconvenience for passengers who need to travel between the Beenleigh/Gold Coast and Ipswich/Springfield lines during track closure. By my estimate, it could save at around 1 hr (around 1:15 by R599+R591 rail bus vs 15 minutes the 104 takes off-peak.
Track closures are very inconvenient, so why not improve the situation a little?

Apparently the majority/all 306/322 services inbound and outbound were delayed today due to overcrowding. A number were 15+ mins late leaving cultural centre. Standing loads with some services having 50+ Passengers onboard prior to Bowen Hills in both directions. Caused due to the track closure.

So two weeks out from a week of closures on the inner-Beenleigh Line (and significantly less services via South Bank) and no timetable info at all on TransLink's website. p%ss poor Translink!

verbatim9

They do mention replan your journey though.

There are lots of buses to Southbank, Buranda and the PA bus stations from Roma Street.

Can't replan my journey if I don't even know which Ferny Grove trains travel beyond Roma Street.

Trackwork on the Gold Coast line this weekend. Is it just me, or is it pretty moronic to do trackwork on the GC line during holiday season? Yeah, I know there's buses, but they're horrifically slow (probably worse than most lines due to the high speeds south of Beenleigh).

Honestly, of all the lines you'd schedule trackwork for at this time of the year, GC should be bottom of the list!

(And yes, FWIW this has affected me personally, and led me to contribute to M1 traffic; I simply didn't have the time for the extra 53 minutes each way would take by rail-bus vs train, so I drove to Helensvale to get on the tram).

Incidentally, there's probably ~30% of people on the tram wearing masks).

SurfRail

I've always found GC railbuses to be as fast, or even faster, provided the services are set up right.  That's an indictment on the shambolic alignment through Logan and the southside of course.

The express buses from Southbank to Helensvale are faster than the train from what I have experienced and what Surfrail has stated.

achiruel

I guess it depends on where your trip originates. If it's from an inner-city station, than yes, it might well be quicker. If it's from an intermediate station on the Beenleigh line (as mine was) where there's no express buses, it gets awfully long.

Some examples:

Trinder Park - Helensvale railbus 1hr 37min, train 46min (+51 minutes)
Runcorn - Helensvale railbus 1hr 42min train 52min (+50 minutes)

Regardless, I still think that having trackwork on the line that attracts the most tourists in the network, on the weekend before Christmas, is not really well thought out, and it would be more sensible to work on some lines that don't attract so many tourists like Springfield or Ferny Grove etc.

HappyTrainGuy

Ideal time actually. Lower patronage (both passenger and freight). No school (primary, secondary, TAFE  or uni). Government public servant shut down. Staffing reductions at freight facilities due to public holidays. Manufacturing/warehouse sector quieting down for the Christmas-New Years period.

It might cause a few headaches for some passengers but in the overall scheme it's making maximum use of the closure especially when CRR works are triggering closures (mtce work has been shifted to align with CRR closure dates otherwise it's via Sherwood services). Some might not see it that way but that's the reality.

Now this is utter garbage. Particularly the bit about manufacturing/warehouse sector quietening down, I know this for a fact as I work in that sector and it is flat out busy right up until 23rd December. There's also no public holidays until next weekend, so I'm not sure what relevance that has to the just-completed closure.

Lower patronage might apply during the week, but I've been travelling by train to the Gold Coast on weekends for a number of years, and December is consistently the busiest (except last year, perhaps, but we all know the reason behind that). Add to that, the recently reopened border with NSW/Vic and likely more travel by air (not everyone will be coming to OOL), and to help their experience on the way, get on a train, get off at Park Rd to be offloaded to a (non-DDA-compliant) bus, to complete their journey. Not a good look for tourism in Qld IMO.

HappyTrainGuy

That particular section I was referring to how most industries close down or have skeleton staff from 24 December - 4th January.

Air travel demand still isn't high and buses can cope.

Some might not like it but that's how it's always been and will always be. It's the quietest time for the railways (as I said patronage and network demand) which is why there's always a lot of major trackwork programs being run. After the crr works crews should be heading straight to the FG/Northgate shut down and then the Springfield shut down all of which has been in place for over 15 months. Freight operators are aware and have more trains running or have dedicated priority time slots when AR/FI is closed (which will apply to the next Gold Coast shutdown with no fright movements allowed).
