Transperth, operating a small network (roughly 1/3 the size of the Citytrain network) carries around 15 million passengers/quarter.

There is a fair degree of latent capacity on Citytrain, particularly out of peak.

Couriermail Quest --> Passenger numbers on a new southeast Queensland train line have surged

QuoteStatistics show commuters are putting their trust back in one of southeast Queensland's newest train lines with patronage at two stations increasing significantly.

Data provided by the state government shows two stations along the Redcliffe Peninsula Line have experienced substantial patronage growth.

The line opened in October 2016.

The number of people jumping on board at Mango Hill East rose by 35 per cent when statistics from October to December 2018 were compared to the same period in 2017.

Patronage at Murrumba Downs jumped 21 per cent.

These improvements were among the highest growth in southeast Queensland.

Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said it was "good news" but more still needed to be done to get more people on board.

"The Redcliffe Peninsula Line did have a pretty slow start, so it is coming off a low base," Mr Dow said.

"It is pleasing to see some growth in particular at Mango Hill East and Murrumba Downs."

Mr Dow said he would be interested to see the statistics for other stations along the line.

"Come July we will do what we always do and put in an RTI (right to information) request for complete patronage statistics," he said.

Mr Dow said it had been good to see the reliability of the services on the Peninsula Line improving.

State Labor MP for Redcliffe Yvette D'Ath said a new service, from 7.10am from Monday to Friday, Kippa-Ring to Central Station, would be introduced from Monday.

"With the new university precinct at Petrie just around the corner I have no doubt we'll continue to see patronage grow," Mrs D'Ath said.

Mr Dow said passengers would welcome the new service.

"The best thing (the state government) can do is get a consistent Monday to Friday timetable," he said.

Despite the government introducing its Fairer Fares program Mr Dow said affordability was still an issue for regular train users.

The state government did not provide patronage statistics for other stations on the Peninsula line.
