Grab new NightLink timetables at Griffith open day

Visitors to Griffith University?s Nathan Campus Open Day this Sunday (August 9) can be among the first in Brisbane to get one of TransLink?s handy new NightLink ?Pocket Pal? timetables.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said NightLink public transport services were bus, train and ?FlatFare? taxis that ran across the TransLink network late on Friday and Saturday nights between 1am and 5am.

?NightLink has been a popular initiative for more than three years, particularly for university students heading home after a night out in the Valley,? Ms Nolan said.

?There are more than 20 NightLink bus services and three NightLink train services which cover a large geographical area and regularly take home more than 15,000 weary revellers each month.

?NightLink services are popular with university students, particularly the N412 to St Lucia, N200 to Carindale, N330 to Algester and N555 to Loganholme.

?NightLink trains also operate on the Beenleigh, Caboolture and Ipswich lines to augment regular train services that finish around 1am.

?TransLink Transit Officers patrol the NightLink train services with police providing roving patrols to Central, Fortitude Valley, Roma Street and South Brisbane train stations.?

Ms Nolan said the NightLink initiative was developed as part of the 17-point Brisbane City Safety Action Plan, designed to improve personal safety in inner Brisbane.

?These services have become a staple for those who enjoy Fortitude Valley?s unique night life and have contributed to reductions in taxi queues and violence in this entertainment precinct,? she said.

?TransLink will have a stand at the Griffith University Nathan Campus Open Day on Sunday which will include the handy new NightLink ?Pocket Pal? timetables and other information about public transport.

?I especially encourage students to visit the TransLink stand and pick up one of the new timetables to see how NightLink services can provide them with a cheap, safe and convenient way to get home after a night out.?

The new pocket pals are also available from the Transit Information Centre on Roma Street, the Visitor Information Centre in Queen Street, TransLink-attended community events such as the Ekka and distributed around Fortitude Valley and other popular nightclub precincts.

Suggestion for improvement for Night link services; There should be an initiative for bidirectional services from Indooroopilly Eight Mile Plains Aspley or Chermside and Carindale. Is Night link already bidirectional for NYE? If not a good test eve for  bidirectional night services.

See if you can put forward to the new Transport minister as an email? At least we can have night link services that run on Sunday to Monday Mornings where long weekends exist.

Re: NightLink proposal

On the whole, I wouldn't mess with what already exists. Those cross-town NightLink buses sound nice in theory, but in practice there'd probably be too many safety concerns with making connections at 2am in the morning in suburban hubs.I get that you're trying to connect the suburbs to the rest of the network, but the fact is there is very low demand for inbound trips at these times. We don't even have buses going between Carindale and Garden City after 7pm on a weekday, perhaps fix the low-hanging fruit first.

The only routes I'd introduce would be an N300, N174 and possible bustitution of the railway lines (Beenleigh, Caboolture and Ipswich) to provide an hourly frequency (rather than just one service). The inbound running with what we have now is enough. If we wanted to establish a 7-day/week 24 hour network, may I suggest starting with services to Chermside, UQ, Carindale and 8MP from the City. Run them hourly and in banks, so they all arrive in the CBD within 5-10 minutes of each other and all leave at similar times.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

The Blue CityGlider I would support (on 15 minute frequency, don't half bake this corridor), 196/199 I'm 50/50 on. The reason for this is because the distances involved are generally short and both are within semi-reasonable walking distance, or CityCycle if you are sober enough to ride a bike (24-hour pass is $2). MaroonGlider, no way. Waste of money and would duplicate the route to Carindale.

Not sure on the buses taking NightLink routings. I was thinking you'd just have the buses all leave from Adelaide St City Loop stops, then head off into the busways (remembering Roma St through to QSBS is closed) and follow the usual routes from there.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

(NB: this is a draft. I'm thinking the N111 and N222 should do the Valley loop, and have a few graphic-design things to fix.)

Excellent! looks good The Uni one should go via Toowong Taringa Indooroopilly loop back to Uni

I think hourly frequency isn't great, even at night. Half hourly would be the bare minimum. Who wants to wait one hour in the dead of night at a bus stop all alone?

A suggestion: a 444* short service, terminating at Indooroopilly to this.

I know, but it's about getting a foot in. Buses running 'all night' is already a big improvement.

I can report that the N392 departing the Valley at 1:15 has about 10 passengers on board. Granted the last Ferny train leaves at 0:58...

Todo: passenger count on each N392 service.

Someone who doesn't want to pay $40+ dollars for a taxi? Given most people taking buses at this time would generally have semi-flexible schedules (e.g. night out, studying at Uni), I don't think they'd mind having an hourly service. NightLink only runs hourly and it does quite well.

It wouldn't be an issue if you had the buses departing in 'banks' anyway. Have all the terminating services arriving at :55 past, then have a CityGlider/199 come through on the hour, then everything leaves 3-5 minutes after that. No long waits required in the city unless you are originating there, and suburbia is generally pretty safe.

So I was reading through the Reddit thread on Melbourne's new 24h weekend PT network, and the following post jumped out at me:

Definitely 24 hour PT is the way to go. Lock out laws are so archaic and backward thinking. Just allow the bars to be open until 3am and have night club licenses for legitmate night clubs for the rest night until 6am, with out lockouts imposed.

Clubs can still open until 5 am its just they cannot serve alcoholic drinks after 3 am and also they can serve alcohol until 5 am up to 12 times a year for special events. So I dont think Nightlink frequency will be affected.

You honestly think clubs will stay open after 3am not serving alcohol? It'd be the (very rare) exception, not the rule.

This quote has been doing the rounds forever, because it is true. The lock-out pushes people out on to the street, even though from a "rational" perspective, people should simply stay in clubs until they're ready to go home. To keep it short and simple, people act irrationally on alcohol (and all drugs which impair the mind) and not all night clubs are equal.

I think also this standing around is a problem. The times that I felt threatened by some random were when I was standing for a taxi. In a venue there are cameras, staff and security, so much less likely to be put in a bad situation.

This is exactly why this early lockout is such a stupid idea, and I struggle to see why the people in power just don't see this. I would say that a number of the violent incidents in the Valley could be prevented through further staggering of closing times. Not everyone who goes into the Valley will stay there until 5am. I know I never did, I was usually leaving a bit before the old 3am lockout time, when the lines for the taxis were shorter and the other passengers on the N555 more coherent/less prone to puking up the back of the bus!

I have heard anecdotal evidence that much of the violence currently happens around the lockout time time, when a lot of people are leaving venues around the same time and are dealing with long queues at food vendors, taxi ranks, etc. By moving the lockouts forward, this problem would be exasperated due to kicking out everyone at 1am, including the people who would have previously left after 1am but ahead of 3am. However, the statistics don't show this – the resulting closure of bars, pubs and clubs will sees the amount of revellers drop dramatically – less people in the nightlife areas will obviously mean less violence, and this skews the statistics.

The way taxi ranks are designed are awful and controbute to the problem of violence.
Its another reason why uber is such a success.  Who thought having a massive line of taxis waiting to pick up passengers, with a massive line of drunk people waiting to get into cabs, who are standing beside theempty cabs because you have to load 1 at a time is stupid.

More than likely V.  I expect the PT network to be progressively wound down. 

If we are not in virtual lock down by Wednesday I would be very surprised.

Interesting that Translink ran nightlink trains in the early hours of this morning.

Three NightLink trains will operate on Monday morning:

Beenleigh line departing Bowen Hills - 3.43am
Caboolture line departing Roma Street - 3.42am

It's a start anyway when Public holidays fall on a Monday. A lot of people go out to the bars and clubs on a Sunday eve/night when Monday is a holiday. A good support Covid recovery measure as well.
