Translink Fare Modelling - Brisbane's Transport - we just can't afford it!

I've done a simple 'economic' model of TransLink fares using three projected cases. 7.5% is the base rate, 10% is the medium case and 15% is the high case. The outlook is not good, and it is likely that future fare rises will be between medium and high, given the current state of the network and rises of 20% and 15% in the last few years.

Like I always like to say, reality is the best frame of reference to base decisions on, even if it tells you things that you or others don't like. The Transport minister and Quirk can spin all they like, without fundamental change to the way PT is operated, costs will go absolutely out of control to the extent that it would be cheaper to catch a taxi from one end of Adelaide Street to another.

What is unsustainable shall not be sustained. Period.

Failure to act now, and make proper, fundamental re-organisation of the bus network will only set the scene for a catastrophic fare crisis within the next 8 years, and given that the typical term of a gov't is about 10 years, it will probably land in the current cohort of MPs laps. No doubt BCC will use it's standard line "That's a TransLink responsibility". While BCC doesn't set fares, they DO set costs... and obviously the two are linked.

Furthermore, bus volumes are set to double to 1000+ or more in peak in 8 years. So TWICE as bad as now. Wonder how they will handle that - invent a new physics for the city?

No one has suggested a fare rise for 2015.  Doesn't mean that there won't be one, although I doubt a 7.5% one.
