Affordability still the stand out issue for Q1 2012/13.  Will only worsen with further fare increases,

For the period 2 July 2012 to 30 Sep 2012, patronage = 46,929,430

1/7/2012 was a Sunday, so wouldn't have made a huge difference.

For comparison Qtr to 30 Sep 2011 = 46.5 million & Qtr to 30 Sep 2010 = 46.9 million.

I'd say that 9 then free has had a small positive impact.

Free trips are running around 200,000 a week ...  just converting the 10th journey to free in the main I expect plus those who 'zone' ...  so net loss?

200,000 x 12 = 2.4 million

Not really working that well is it?

If it was really working well you would reasonably expect the paid trips to increase and the free on top of that.

It is the price resistance issue for those not getting to nine journeys.  They are not bothering ..

If they are losing the revenue anyway they should just shell out for cheaper fares for everybody, and over time watch it translate into greater patronage than the current mess.

There is no evidence they are losing revenue as against the previous corresponding quarter.

Not yet, but paid trips have decreased in real terms ... probably more  than the 15% increase quantum ...

Reliability and frequency of bus is worst of the three modes by a long shot.

The spin that is churned out about how affordability will be improved by further fare increases is rather hollow, as is the bus OTP garbage ...

Public transport performance data confirms the fare fail ...

Greetings,

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mr Emerson is to be congratulated for the first phase of the release of Public Transport Performance Data.

Something we have long lobbied for.

The data does confirm however that the major issue is fare affordability, and this in turn is leading to a patronage decrease in paid trips.  If the nine and then free was actually working you would reasonably expect an increase in paid trips.  Not happening.  See --> http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=9305.0

Many concerned citizens have signed our petition calling for a review of fares on the TransLink south-east Queensland system.  Obviously this is a major issue, supported by much feedback.

If you could continue to promote this petition this may assist in the turning the corner of fare mediocrity, inequitable fare price table and fare-box leakage.

I would say that the evidence infers that paid trips have decreased by around 8%.  Give or take.

I was expecting that to be the outcome of the fare structure. It should be the target of any fare structure to increase patronage/profits. If you can achieve the same profitability (or lack thereof, as is the case here) by having lower fares in general, but higher patronage, then that should be where we shift to from here.

I particularly like how the weekly data has not been provided retrospectively and the quarterly data is no longer provided, making it harder to make comparisons.  Although it looks like fare increases are really biting hard.
