Huntingdale station to remain neglected

Huntingdale station to remain neglected

LEADING transport groups have united to demand a solution to ongoing problems at Huntingdale Railway Station.

The Road User Collaborative - which includes Metro trains, Yarra Trams and the RACV - is pushing for improvements at Monash’s most notorious station.

Problems include pedestrian safety, poor bike storage and its constantly overflowing carparks.

RACV public policy general manager Brian Negus said the station had been neglected despite being a key link to Melbourne’s southeast.

“Huntingdale station is typical of those in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, with facilities and a layout that are struggling to cope with rapidly growing demand for access,” Mr Negus said.

“Access improvements are urgently needed to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people to and from this station.”

Monash University has also made a submission asking for upgrades to Huntingdale station’s bus shelter, asking for an extension to the existing structure and more shelter for commuters.

Public Transport Users Association outer-east convener Jeremy Lunn said the Government should look at low-cost solutions for the station and save money for the proposed Rowville rail link.

“If the Rowville rail link gets up, then most of the students using the station as a transport hub will have a direct link to university,” Mr Lunn said.

In August, a commuter survey rated Huntingdale as Monash’s worst station.

Transport Department spokesman David Stockman said there were no plans to upgrade Huntingdale station or make it one of the city’s 78 premium stations.
