Minister for Transport
The Honourable Rachel Nolan
18/01/2011

Ipswich services to resume this afternoon

Train services on the Ipswich line will be fully operational from today's afternoon peak, running on a standard weekday timetable.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan caught the test train this afternoon from Goodna to Ipswich, inspecting the line and getting a first-hand look at the exceptional work done by Queensland Rail staff to restore service.

"Queensland Rail employees have done an incredible job under difficult circumstances to keep South East Queensland's train services running wherever possible during the past week," Ms Nolan said.

"More than 40 kilometres of track was affected on the Ipswich line, with Goodna and Gailes stations in particular badly affected by flooding," she said.

"On the Ipswich line, more than 200 rail workers have been working 24 hours a day since the floods hit last week to get services back up and running.

"This equates to 1500 work days or 36,000 man hours to repair the Ipswich line, including repairs to 20 kilometres of fencing.

"I'm pleased this hard work has paid off for Ipswich commuters, with Ipswich and Rosewood services returning to normal from today."

Queensland Rail CEO Paul Scurrah said all train lines across the South East Network are now operating on their usual timetable.

"Goodna station was unrecognisable last week, and now it is almost back to normal with a new coat of paint and scores of workers on site making the station safe and accessible for customers," Mr Scurrah said.

"All public transport until last service on Friday 21 January will be free to keep unnecessary cars off the road, and to help people with the recovery effort and return to work."

Wow...what a kick in the guts for Queensland Rail... I really feel sorry for them! All that hard work in getting the Ipswich line back to normal only to have the weather strike again!

ozbob

Very tough, but I am sure they are on the job as I type.

Media Release 18 January 2011

SEQ:  Thanks to Queensland Rail  for recovering the Ipswich - Rosewood line

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has thanked Queensland Rail for the marvellous effort in recovering the Ipswich - Rosewood line.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"The flood damage to the Ipswich - Rosewood line was major. To have the line back in operation so soon is a marvellous result.  The effort by the track and repair gangs and their support crews is greatly appreciated."

"A storm late this afternoon caused a temporary issue but this too was soon resolved by the hard working Queensland Rail team."

"There is a lot more recovery work yet to be done on the rail network throughout Queensland, but we are grateful for the outstanding recovery effort made for the community by returning the Ipswich - Rosewood line back to normal services.  Thank you and well done!"
